Last year in December my day gave me an '80 two door Malibu. It's a pretty straight car. It has several spots of surface rust, but the bottom of the doors a rusted straight through. There's also one hole on the driver side rear lower quarter. The interior in excellent shape, all it really need's is a good cleaning. It originally had a 305 with 350 head's hooked up to a turbo 350 trans. I just recently started ordering parts it needs and changing things up.

The hood is propped up like that because the motor I just swapped in is too big for the stock hood. More info on that in a bit.

I didn't get a pic of it, but in the trunk I've got new window felts inside and out for both doors and the weatherstripping for the door. As well as new A pillar covers.

The driver side door panel is off because the door latch assembly on that side is broken. I need to order a lock for the glove box though because it doesn't have one at all right now. Few cracks in the dash so that'll need to be changed. The heat, A/C, and radio works though.

Back half here. That's the driver side door panel in the back and the box on the right has the new latch assembly. I didn't get a picture of it but the headliner is in perfect condition too.

This a built 350 my dad used to have in a truck of his. With everything it has done to it, it's estimated to have 500hp(no proof for this so take it or leave it for now). It has Keith Black pistons, it's bored out something like 40 over, been ported and polished, larger crank, and '69 Corvette 375 heads. I had to order new headers for it because all the ones we had wouldn't fit in the Malibu. They should be here today and will be put on sometime next week. Once that's done I get a video of it running.

4 inch cowl hood scoop to accommodate the new motor. I thought I got it in the pic but up against the wall are two lower door skins I'm going have put in to replace the rusted ones.

Header's literally just got here.

I'll update this whenever I order something or have something done to the car. Thanks for looking!

Can't wait to see how she turns out Loon. :) I love reading through these older car threads instead of the newer, monotonous car stuff. (that how you spell it?)

Cheers, Cougar23

Looks gangster, but a very nice car.👍 Look forward to seeing how it turns out.:)

Looks like it's gonna be a nice project. Lots of people out there use the chassis for drag racing...I personally might take the project in a different direction, (take pro touring, only less flash and more trackday) but, hey, with that mill, this should be a pretty quick box no matter what you do with it. :3

Rust is gunna be a major undertaking. Be warned. It's careful, concentrated work to remove rust and touch up, especially on the exterior.

Engine looks great. But I'd get a professional's opinion on the rust before setting off

Thanks for the interest in the car guys. Yesterday I had the trans pulled to see what all needed to be replaced. Turns out everything did, so the entire transmission has to rebuilt. $1100 for a complete rebuild including a bigger stall and torque converter to handle the power. Had to get a new crossmember for it too because one whole side had been rusted through. Next Sunday I'll be taking the headers to be put on, and two weeks from now I should have it fully in my possession, insured, and driving around.

hahahah you have to take video of the bits of rust falling from it at idle, from all the torque!!! nice oproject, I'd actually just toss in a well-built rearend and a Ratchet shifter and some black Weld wheels and terrorize the streets.

Yeah, man. Add an LSD and it will be one hell of a drift weapon. Good Bilstein shocks for it should be fairly cheap, too. Nice work!

Will do as soon as the headers are put on.

This car could be epic. Keep it clean, and you'll have the ultimate sleeper :p.
I plan on painting the entire thing, except maybe a bit of the window trim, in a satin black.

I do want to put in a LSD but I was hoping to find some info on taking the shortcut of just welding up the one I've got now. Anyone got any knowledge on that?

You could have started with a better looking car. I hate everything about that era of design.

Looks like it's shaping up to be a scary ride though. Good luck.

Do NOT run a welded diff on anything other than a dedicated drift or drag car. It will lock the differential completely at all times so the inside wheel will be forced to skip and hop when turning.

I didn't quite like it at first, but after looking and finding lots of well built Malibu's I couldn't wait to start.

Looks like I need to choose what exactly I want to do with it then.

Please tell us your not spending $1100.00 os a turbo 350 :yuck:
A 200-4R would be much better choice these days.
Your car was produced with a 7.5/7.625 rear axle with 26 spline axles,
If you look around you can find a good positraction and probably a good gearset from 1982-1987 Chevy/GMC S-10's & Blazers, most had 3.42/3.73 and even 4.10's were common, axle splines were changed in later models so be sure to get proper one, do a little research and you might save some money and get what you want in same process 👍
Yeah, I just had the T350 rebuilt. And thanks for the info on the gears, I'll definitely start checking junk yards for those.

No new pics or videos just yet, but a lot has been done since my last post. Turns out the headers I ordered weren't right for it. I ordered new ones from Jeg's that fit like they should. Got a new floor shifter installed so I don't have the column shifter anymore. Replaced the old transmission cross member. Had a new exhaust system installed. Put in new motor mounts because the old ones made the motor sit crooked. The new cowl is on the hood now so no more clearance issues. I would already be driving the car but I'm having to jump through some hoops with the car title right now, but in a few more days I'll be able to get a video of it running and some more pictures.

After a couple months dealing with this car's title it's finally all sorted out. The only bad thing is now the alternator is bad and it has to be fixed. I hooked the battery back up this morning and got a quick of it running.

I think I need a better camera to capture the sound better.

New wheels are next on the docket for the Malibu. As soon as I figure out what size I need. I'm clueless with the backspacing and off set so it's taking me a minute to choose. I know I'm looking to get these hopefully in 17's so I can run as low a profile tire as possible. I'd like to put a 10 inch rim on but I have no idea if it's even plausible without have to notch my frame or put in a mini tub.

I was told to measure from my hub to the inside and outside and then take 1"1/2 off that and somehow I'll get my backspacing. Truthfully though it's all over my head.
