I saw the Motor Sport Elise pop up in the UCD, so I decided to grab it. After all, it was an absolute monster when I drove it last in GT3 (on small tracks at least), so I figured it would be quite the contender for mid-range PP races on tight circuits. Then it occurred to me that there was yet another racing Elise in my garage, the old 111R RM that I hadn't really touched since the first month of owning the game. So I set them up with the same tune, gave each one the maximum allowed downforce, turned of driver aids, tuned them all the way, then set off to the Top Gear Test Track to see which one was worth it.

1999 Motor Sport Elise:

-331hp
-648kg
-582pp

2004 Elise 111R RM:

-310hp
-720kg
-584pp

First off, I want to say how surprised I was at the aftermarket support for the Motor Sport Elise. There were two stages left of weight reduction, meaning the final weight of the vehicle tipped the scales at 1428 lbs. As a reference, my first generation Toyota MR2 weighed 2350 lbs on the showroom floor. There were plenty of other modifications one could add as well, so the already race-prepped platform can be built upon as your budget allows.

Power is roughly equal, but once again the Motor Sport Elise takes the advantage. Combining these two aspects, one can see the massive power/weight advantage it has over the Elise 11R RM. However, it does lose out in one category, and that's downforce. This is clearly a mistake by Polyphony, as the Motor Sport Elise has a high downforce front bumper, yet has a rating of 0 for the front. The Elise RM, on the other hand, has 20 downforce in the front and 50 in the rear, a full 15 more than its competitor (equipped with an aftermarket wing).

On the track, the RM was much easier to drive. Even at low speeds, it stuck and was completely drama-free. The Motor Sport was a different story. It required careful attention and was very delicate when on both the throttle and on the brakes while cornering. For us skilled drivers, it probably would've been the winner on a larger track. However, due to it's supposed lack of front downforce and handling difficulties, it ran a 107.953, which is about 2.5 seconds slower than the Elise RM.

If you do have the choice, I suggest going with the Motor Sport Elise because it's simply a much cheaper option and doesn't have any major overall disadvantage compared to the RM. But if running consistently fast times on short tracks is your thing, grab the 111R. Both cars are fairly equal, it just depends on the driver and the track.

Does cheaper have any relevance though in GT5?
Just drive one seasonal and you can afford any amount of tuning parts.

The Motor Sport Elise over steers a lot more, has less downforce and doesn't have a "livery"
The lack of front down force really makes the Motor Sport Elise the inferior car.
