Ok, so I've had this stupid neighbor for about half a year now and they've decided to take up playing piano. The only problem is they've pushed the piano against my wall. FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUuuu... Anyways I hate it so much. The music she plays isn't even music it's some annoying jingle she keeps practicing for hours that's only like 30 seconds. I would like it if she played legitimate music, but no. I've decided to blast my stereo the way I've always wanted to so I don't have to listen to that crap. Help!

By the way, is listening to your stereo loud (hell yea) at 4:00-5:00 PM illegal?

And here I though this was going to be a birthday thread...

Have you tried talking to her or are you going straight into "taste of her own medicine" mode?

Is it illegal? Doubt it.

Is it petty? Yes.

Agreed. I'd say talking to them would be the best approach. What are you blasting on your stereo anyhow? Dubstep? Twisted Sister (we're not gonna take it)? Try playing Beethoven,Bach,Debussy...etc, to get the point driven that she needs to learn something a little more sophisticated.

I like your idea.

I blast dubstep for fun at home though.

Ask them if they can move it to another wall... Are you in a Semi-detached or Apartment/Condo?

It's probable that they are not aware that they are disturbing you, so either speak to them, or (as I did with a noisy neighbour), compose a polite letter to inform them that you are being disturbed by the noise coming from their place and ask them if they could take measures to minimise it, atleast when you are commonly in your place. Attempting to keep things civil is by far the best initial option. If you try speaking to them or writing a letter and get nowhere with that approach, try speaking to your neighbours (e.g. the flat below the offending one) and see if they have similar thoughts.

If they turn out to be unsympathetic and/or unobliging, then you can start thinking about what to do next. The 'fight fire with fire' approach is always an option, but it's definitely not the best plan of action in the first instance.

Of course, you have to bear in mind that they are allowed to make some noise during daytime hours - and they may not be obliged to do anything even if you do complain. The idea of making more noise back might make you feel better for a while, but remember that it will annoy your other neighbours (as well as yourself) and could just make matters worse - since then you would be the one facing the complaints.

Good luck 👍

^ And if that doesn't work, record a baby crying, set it to repeat and go away for the weekend!* :D

* I cannot take any responsibility for the consequences of such a petty and, although satisfying and funny, potentially illegal action. :sly:
