Okay I am sure folks have probably tried to explain the way an LSD works, however I may have an easier way! For the first scenario let's say you have yourself a miata and your cruising along and all of a sudden you run out of gas Well the first thought that goes through your head is to pull o er on the shoulder. So you made it! Next you have gotten back with the gas tank and you start 'er up, oh no all of a sudden u here the right tire just spinning in the mud uncontrollably and your left is barely spinning at all on the Tarmac, what is going on?
Well there is your first sight into a mechanical LSD! That is exactically what it does on production cars.
Now the question is asked well what about the LSD in high performance cars?
It almost is idenical to what I described up there but this time let us take a vacation to japan and along our miata. We shall be going to Tsukuba circuit, and our training will be using the first turn, so here it is as you slow down and being the right-hander that it is will be the right set of the car. This is where acceleration kicks in, as opposed to the left side of the car is the decelaration.
Now that we have that out of the way, let's go to initial torque that is where the LSD (on a certain setting) decides to work, usually it is a ECU that does that.
I really hope that was helpful! There are certain scenarios that require a bit more complexity with the LSD. One of them would be your drive train. For example let's take a car with a FF drivetrain. We all know they are privy to understeer, therefore you may want to set the deceleration higher to give it more through on the turn.
There is so much more to this and I won't go in to anymore detail for now, feel free to ask me again later, if all else fails find a websight that shows the inside components.,
