Leonidae
same as any supercar: kill rainforests, spoil the oceans, pollute the air and destroy endangered species.

But fun!! It's like, I know my '79 Super Beetle isn't the best thing for the environment, but sure as hell beats driving a Suburban 30 miles every day.

And an old Beetle has character, that counts for a lot.

I'm sure Mercedes know what they're getting themselves into if they attempt a 500bhp hatchback and i guess they'll just add a lot of electronics to keep the thing under control.

I would love to see it made as it'll be just plain barmy and i don't think it looks too bad 👍 But I do have to ask the question as to why the market needs a 500bhp hatch. It'll be rediculously expensive (£60000?) and will just be essentially a hatch version of the SLK. So why not just get an SLK (which looks nicer)?

It seems that MB is going after BMW by designing ugly cars. Lateral thinking at its best.

V8? Hatchback? where have I heard THAT before...hmm...

I love hatchbacks but this will NOT be on my list of favorites. The nose looks too long and bastardizes the SLK. V8.....psssh.......good luck saving gas there. Rear drive is appealing, but as someone stated before, there will be no room in the rear, making the whole idea of a hatchback useless. This thing is going to be a squirley as the first M-Coupe regardless of how many electronics they install. I really hope this is just an artists rendering because it is really an eyesore IMO and in more ways than one.

wow...autobild strikes again and another useless 2 pages of discussion...

to get things straight:

1. it won't look anything like that (if it will ever be realized).

2. it won't get a 500bhp engine (if it will ever be realized).

3. it won't be the 1 series competitor, since merc is already represented in that class.

With what? The A-Class isn't a 1 series competitor, and the C-Class is bigger and more expensive than the 1 series respecitvely, so that's not a 1-series competitor either.

There is a B-Class. It's a direct competitor to the 1-series in terms of size and market segment.

It's roomier than a 1-series, and has decent kit... but then you remember you're paying Mercedes money for a front-wheel drive van... wait, it's a compact... but it drives quite like a van.

Gotta love Merc's niched to death line-up.

There isnt anything wrong with their niche structure to their lineup, as a matter of fact, GM has been saying that they may do the same thing with ALL of their cars pretty soon.

Well, let's see how sales pan out.

It's not really the niche structure per se that bugs me, I guess, but the thought of paying so much for some of these cars when their direct competitors are all a price class lower. I see the A-class, B-class and R-class working as some really great Mitsubishis, but not as Mercs.

That's why BMW has the Mini under another brand name... but wait, Minis are expensive, too...

Oh well, c'est la vie.
