BMW is providing an exhaust upgrade for its M3. I'm not quite sure if its just an option or if it can be bought alone.

I think it addresses a major complaint about the M3, its middleground exhaust note. It was never really a Ferrari / LFA soprano screamer and it is not really a muscle car / AMG brute brawler.

BMW has decided...that it wants to be an AMG Mercedes. It still has its M3esque notes in there, but the inspiration is pretty clear.

BMW AMG3:

More than likely an add-on option after purchase. My dealer has a rather healthy selection of these M Performance parts on hand & had a 135i displaying them sometime back.

Like the rest of the parts, this one isn't cheap; $4,374 w/out dealer installation, so it's ridiculously high price compared to what you can buy from say, Dinan.

Wow, missed the price from autoblog.

The thing I liked about the Dinan and Alpina tuners is that they kept the odd BMW note which i'm sure millions of happy owners love. This "M" part seems to ape the AMG note.

BMW says this will help put the power down better for the car, but honestly, seems a bit late seeing as the tuners you listed & others, have already done such things.

But, I guess this will be great for those who want a factory warranty with their parts.

For that money I'd just put down an extra 2K and get a good amount of horsepower from a full system. Also, a better looking one
The Akrapovic evo:

Looks much better

i'd rather just give it to fluid motor union and have them do it...

Never heard of them, but I think they sound the best. That noise really personifies (or noisifies rather) the key characteristics of the M3: high revving power.

The Motor Union exhaust sound great but...

If I were going to put an exhaust on my E92 M3, I would sell the car, buy an E46 M3, and give 'er some straight pipes.

M3s shouldn't have 8 cylinders unless it's made by Ferrari. As it is, it doesn't sound half as good as the V8 you'd find in a Camaro, nor does it sound as good as the old straight sixes. And certainly not the E30's 4 banger.

At least it does not have forced induction, and revs higher than the E46

You're kidding. Having heard the V8, the V10 and the I6... the V8 is the manliest sounding of the bunch. Has a little burble burble here, a little grawwr-grawwr there, and the same manic chainsaw shriek as the I6 once the cams change over.

Granted, it doesn't have the basso profundo of a huge high-displacement V8, but it's pretty good for a medium sized engine.

Yeah, what's manlier than a car that sounds like a tractor on a cold startup hehe. I would still take the M5s V10 over the M3s V8 any day though. That V10 exhaust note is just sweet
