now if memory serves from the last time i serviced a M3 there is a thin plate under the cap-

1, this would have stopped oil spitting out anyway
2, i would have bet that it wouldnt have allowed anything as bulky as a sock to go down.

and if a sock got in it would be very easy for a moving cam to shread it (ive seen a spanner bent with ease by a cam at idle speed) ok it could have got caught somewhere in the valvetrain that may have caused piston/valve collision.

Let's see. A camshaft, tube sock, and a dumb guy trying to plug a hole containing lube.

I sense a really perverse scenario at hand.

So, he owns a Bimmer and not a flashlight?

He does. Every BMW since, like the begining of time comes with a glovebox mounted rechargable flashlight maintained by the car's electrical system.

He was just too clueless to use it.

FYI, the underside of the E46 M3 has a series of plastic and aluminium undertrays to deflect road debris and smooth airflow under the car. They are also good at collecting oil caps... O-rings from the filter kit... various small tools...

Not that I have any personal experience with that. ;)

Look in the glovebox. On the left hand side, there should be a rectangular charging station built into the 'bulkhead' with two progs sticking out of it. That is where the flashlight goes. If it is there, I assure you it is removable.

If your sister's car doesn't have one, then it was lost, stolen or it was mistakenly not installed by the yahoos that prep the cars at the dealer when she took delivery.

In North America, it is standard equipment and has been for years. I'm not 100% certain in other markets, but they should all have them as well.

Ha ha ha ha, wow! That picture of the sock puppet put me over the edge, I usually don't laugh very hard when I'm buy myself. Why do guys like that get an M3, I want one. I have yet to own a car with under 100,000 miles on it. I'm workin my way down though. 205,000-150,000-130,00.
