A recent issue of evo magazine had standing start and in gear acceleration times for the M5, so I thought I'd do a quick comparison with GT4. In his tests with the M3, Scaff found that standing starts were slower in GT4 than real life with the M3 (on N2 and N3 tyres), and in gear times were also slower in game with this car.

My test is with the new M5 on N2 tyres and no aids. The test is not exactly fantastic, but it should be interesting to have another comparison at least and see how the results with this car compare to Scaff's results with the M3.

All speeds are in mph.

Standing Starts

Real car:
0-60 5.0
0-100 10.4

GT4:
0-60 5.1
0-100 9.8

In-Gear Times

Speed real/GT4

3rd
20-40 3.2/2.5
30-50 2.8/2.3
40-60 2.7/2.0
50-70 2.7/2.0
60-80 2.5/2.0
70-90 2.5/2.0

4th
30-50 4.0/3.4
40-60 3.7/3.1
50-70 3.5/2.8
60-80 3.5/2.7
70-90 3.5/2.7
80-100 3.4/2.7
90-110 3.4/2.9
100-120 3.7/3.0

5th
30-50 5.0/4.2
50-70 4.6/3.6

6th
50-70 5.8/4.9
70-90 5.2/4.5

7th
50-70 8.1/6.5
70-90 7.8/6.1

Conclusion

Despite not getting off the line well enough in-game to match the real life 0-60 time, the GT4 M5 is already well ahead by 100mph, suggesting it's all out acceleration is quicker in game than with the real life example tested by evo. It's the same story with in-gear times, the GT4 M5 being at least half a second quicker in each time.

Of course, you have to be careful making a direct comparison like this because of the number of variables involved in these kinds of tests. It's interesting to see that the car is quicker in-game than in real life unlike the M3 tested by Scaff. It does suggest however, like Scaff found, that in-gear acceleration times are not particularly well-modelled in game. Not a big deal for most of us, but interesting none the less :)

i think that this just proves that N1, and N2 tires (and maybe even N3's) are NOT the most realistic tire choice. the differences in traction between the game and real life on the n's are quite substantial, but most lap time tests show that lap times are close to RL with the n's. the in-gear acceleration test shows that the cars are simply faster in the game, and therefore the acceleration advantage negates the traction disadvantage with the N's.

therefore the sports tires are most likely the most realistic with the hard compounds being the high performance street tires, the mediums being max performance street tires, and the softs being r-compounds.

discuss.

Excellent work here, well done michaeldenham. I have done some testing with the M5, in the GT4 & Brakes thread I ran some 0-100-0 times for the M5 and compaired them to Autocar magazines real world 0-100-0 figures.

The results are here

GT4 Vs Autocar 0-100-0 tests

My results for the through the gears 0-60mph and 0-100mph tests are close to yours.

In regard to straight line traction (apart from in-gear tests) the N2 and N3 tyres are the closest match to real world times, making them the closest match. The M3 figures refered to by michaeldenham can be found here.

BMW M3 - An analysis of tyre choice

This thread also contains results from lateral-g (cornering traction limits) for N, S and R tyres and compares them with real world figures.

Again the N type tyres are the closest match to the real world figures, now while these tests are only for the BMW M3, they would indicate that as far as can be measured N tyres (actually about half-way between N2 and N3 tyres) are the closest match to real world figures.

Hope you find this of interest.
