Has anyone had any success making a collapsible/fold-able wheelstand for a couch setup?
I live in the city, and don't have any space for a personal desk setup - but I would like to eventually start using a wheel.

I did find this.

However, $250 for what is basically a stand seems a little excessive.

Has anyone tried to make a stand? Specifically one that is fold-able as I don't have much room to store something obnoxiously awkward.

Working on a project at the moment.

Starting from an old stationary bike :odd:. Trying something like the one on the link, but trying to workout the wheel stand support on the side, instead of the middle, to not interfere with left/foot movement to brake pedal.

It seems to me that this model will be unstable, relying on feet weight to compensate weight of the steering wheel and inputs.

Hard to beat a GT Art racing wheel stand for the money. Good adjustability, like not having the center downtube interfering with foot placement on the pedals and very sturdy and stable.

Can be found for about 135.00 U.S. online.

I've made this with an old abb table. And some wood.
Part of the bar fit just under the couch giving a great stability and under the pedals there's antislip so it prevents that the wheelstand moves if im hard braking

Can be folded with unscrewing one bolt.

That was like it was before being changed into a wheelstand..

I did use a Rigid work bench for 13 years... $30 at Home Depot... I used empty boxes to wedge between the tv stand and pedals to keep them from getting away.
Is $250 out of budget, or just a little much for something so simple?
I ask because, PlaySeat Challenge folds up nice and easy and goes in the closet for that many $... and is way more comfy than the couch for playing the game. I've only had mine about a month, but man it has made the game more enjoyable...

It's a little out of budget at the moment, and a little much for what it is - but that seat does look like something I'd much rather get if it was viable in the future.

The work bench looks like a good solution for the interim - I have a carpet where my TV is that should hold the pedals well.

you know, before I had the Rigid table i used an ironing board... the Rigid table is better, but the ironing board got me by...
and, does your couch sit up off the floor a little? I liked the steering wheel a little close, and the legs of the table fit under my first couch... my second couch was lower, and I would put a book under each couch leg to get the clearance.

have fun.

That seems very expensive. You're better off with a diy build, or going to eBay and getting one from there.

Wheel stand pro is your best option for two reasons number one it's a great stand and number 2 it's so versatile you can use it on any seat not just one which most DIY are limited to. I almost forgot number 3 it's easy to put away and get out of the room if you want to. The only downside is you may find it scoots away from you over certain amount of time maybe 20 minutes so you have to kind of pull it back towards you. It depends if you're on a rug like me or on hardwood and if you apply a lot of pressure on the brakes and gas. That's really not a problem though I just give it a quick tug on a straightaway makes no difference to the race.

I would also advise a Wheelstand Pro - I've used one since 2010. I started off with a modified folding work bench, but it was never satisfactory - I had to fasten it to the sofa to stop it being pushed away by pressure on the pedals and that made it very difficult to get in and out of the sofa - also it looked terrible. I have a laminate floor in my games room and the feet of the Wheelstand Pro are covered with aircraft grade non-slip rubber - it doesn't move at all on my floor.

My wheel stand folds up if necessary (I keep it permanently set up). It is also easy to transport to a friends house - I just put it on a passenger seat, still set up and put a seatbelt round it.

I strongly advise against building a DIY wheel stand. You will need to set the wheel to a precise angle and distance to avoid back or shoulder pain. Adjustability is also helpful if relatives or friends will be using your wheel from time to time.

I have a fairly thick carpet where my TV is setup - would the wheelstand stay put on carpet?

My carpet is a thin Berber. It barely slides. I would think it would grab a thick carpet better. That rubber is high quality, as are the adjustment cams, tubing, etc.

Yes - the quality is exceptional - the company which makes them specialises in the manufacture of hydraulic machinery - hence the incredible quality of the cutting and coating and the seamless tubes - the wheel stands are just a sideline (a couple of the Directors are sim-racers). @Sean Renon - I have a friend with a stand on carpet and he doesn't have any problems with slippage.
