Making change....

I am a college student. I go to the biggest catholic university in the United States. So I go into the bookstore today and I purchase a magazine (it was Car some awesome british magazine) so anyway I go to the register and the girl tells me it is $9.25, I hand her $10 then I realize that there is a quarter in my pocket. I tell her "heres a quarter" trying to make her job easier. She looks at me with a long pause and goes "hmm 75 cents so heres a dolllar" I'm not saying that I am some sort of math whiz or anything but this was a college student and it was a quarter. I was just amazed by the whole situation.

Err, it sounds like she got it right (“heres a dolllar” [double sic]), and I don’t blame her for pausing – I can do integral calculus, but sometimes it takes me a while to switch my mind to change-making mode.

Yeah, people rely on the register too much. When my mom tries to make change easier by offering a coin or something after the fact, she always has to walk the clerk through the process in some way, shape, or form.

Actually, if they've been a clerk for a while, it should be automatic. Most clerks here are so desperate for change, they'll automatically ask if you have any coins.

But it's mind blowing how some people can't make the connection.

Anyone ever been asked "ok, so how much change do I owe you?". Yeah, theres actually people out there that dumb, cause i've heard it atleast twice. You know your not made for the job when you have to ask the customer how to do it.

And why are you reading Car?? All they do is diss and insult American cars, even if they are good or making a decent effort. I hate that magazine - every time I read it theres something in there that puts down American cars and it really pi$$es me off.

It's amazing how often a cashier will be confused by me giving them seemingly "pointless" change...

For example, if the total is $6.27 and I have nothing but a $10 and a few pennies, I'll give them $10.02.

Or, if the total is, say, $5.60, and I only have a $20 and some change, I'll give them $20.60.

I don't get more change than I have to, and they don't have to give as much change away...everybody wins.

They may have been out of nickels, though. She didn't say anything about it, which I would have expected.

I used to be a cashier at a gas station... All I can do is laugh (Although I almost did the 7 pennies thing a couple times on the long shifts).

This is not a new phenomenon. as an experiment, I've often handed $7 to a teller, when it is $5+ just to see the confusion. Its even better when the total comes up even, such as $5.25, and you hand them $7.25.

There is a local fast food joint, known for giving bad change. I frequently get odd change back when conducting that experiment. I'll have to get a reciept next time I do it.

It speaks volumes about our education system.

In the end, you have people like this everywhere.

When I worked in a store, I always used to type in the amount that the customer gave me, because then the change is available for all to see. I very rarely made any errors.

The owner used to try to calculate the change in her head, and was frequently wrong.

Actually i have seen worse, it just a few days ago when i was going to the cinema. When buying my usual necessities beforehand the bill came to £4.17. I gave the Lady 2 £2 coins and a 20p making £4.20. I then thought hang on let me give her 2p more so that i get a 5p coin back (Don't like all that loose change ). When i gave her the 2p she looked at me and said 'oh' she gave me 1p back out of the 2p i gave her then gave me 3p from the till so i got 4p back in total - i was thinking wtf and to top it all of she was smiling as if she has just done me a favour when actually i had got back 4p instead of 5p!

I know the amounts may seem trivia but its the principle, having said this though i didn't put up a fuss - i just walked off, lucky for her i was in one of my better moods

well, i see your story but here's a good one from me to all of you.

walk into a local restaurant. order a pizza to go. i wait. when i go to get it, i get the total of $10.59. So i give the girl a $50. its all i had. well she actually has to use a calculator to figure out how much she owes me. like you cant just take 10 outta 50 and get 39 and some change? and after she calculated it, she had to go back and make sure she did it right! and even had her manager double check.

just sad i think...sad...

Thats pretty funny, Well anyways I was at the mall a while back and I bought a few bus tickets for 5 bucks, well the cashier I believe was checking out a pretty fine looking woman reading a magazine in the store and when I gave him exactly 5 bucks he gave me a 10 in return! That was pretty funny. I mean 5 dollar bill is blue and a 10 dollar bill is purple and pinkish and a 20 is just green. I find it funny how he didn't notice if I gave him a 10, 5 or a 20.

J/k, but that is pretty funny. I've only had it happen once and that was when a I gave the cashier a $5 and got a $5 back...Dave and I got a big laugh out of that.

Dad and I put loose change (coins) into the ash tray in the car (no smokers in our family). So when it builds up we usually go to and buy some lunch. we have 5c, 10c, 20c, 50c, $1,$2 coins.

I always count the change before hand and then we buy our 10 - $12 worth of food, and i give them the exact change with about 25-30 coins , funny watching them count it all then their expression when its all correct.

A lot of the time i work out the change before they give it to me, just to make sure. I've found most cashiers to be quite good and havnt run across many silly ones.

One time I paid for lunch with coins at a Jack in the Box drive-thru, and the Latina working there grumbled "que stupido!" or something like that. I guess she found counting to be a chore.
