Ask me
I live in NYC and one day hope to get my first ride. But it came across me M or A? Living in the city with a lot of traffic in a M not good maybe a pain. But an automatic doesn't seem all to race car type of thing. What the heck should I do??

Moved to the appropriate forum.

And... NYC? Buy a bike. You'll be spending a whole lot of money just keeping the AC running in New York traffic.

If you're young, a decent manual with a small motor is not really difficult to drive in heavy traffic. It's in higher performance vehicles where it starts becoming an issue.

You're buying a first car, you will likely destroy said car. Whether or not something seems like a race car type thing should be last on your list.

Ha thing is I love cars buying a bike umm not my thing. I'd like to get maybe a Impreza or an Audi A4.

Yes but it a car for me the first priority would be a for travel going to different states maybe for college getting groceries etc, 2nd priority pure fun and adrenalin rush.

Auto all day for city driving. Trust me on this. I burnt out my transmission in my volvo (which is a manual) do to city driving. After months of stop and go traffic in a big city for college, my transmission finally went out. I would highly recommend a automatic for city driving.

Oh well then, a Impreza in Automatic or an A4 in Automatic (old ones around the year 02). I would like something cool (fast, racing heritage and safe so my insurance isnt sky high not like a Camary for some reason I despise Toyota not their cool cars though, that I could never drive (LFA, GT1, anything fast basically)

Ha. Get a clunker. Wouldn't want to spend all that money and wreck it would you?

Ya but 5Gs on a car I think I can do a DIY if I crash.... maybe....Im sure I can...  I did I little body work and it came out great on my dads 03 Pathfinder. It was a good job for a 15yr old.

Auto in the city is definitely the way to go. Why not an ex-cop car or ex-taxi Caprice/Crown Vic, from what I have heard is that there's a lot down there, & they can be had for fairly cheap.

A little body work isn't going to save a totalled car. Also, what about insurance costs?

Exactly that were my safe Impreza comes in our Audi they are pretty dam safe I think (not like a volvo those things are safe enough to drown in).= to low insurance cost (Impreza or A4)

Those are ugly in my opinion I see to many of them. I'll kill my self before I have to drive that (no offense to the people who drive those by the way).

They're the only '90s cars I would own, Body on frame, RWD, V8s, and the fact that government cars are always very well maintained means I wouldn't hesitate to buy one if I could find any.

The Fords aren't as nice as the Chevy's though. I can agree on that.

I'm out of suggestions, but a first car should be something older. Insurance is cheaper and the overall price for purchasing them is generally less. Same goes for any parts. - '80s Olds, Buicks, Dodges etc. are all good & reliable.

What no really AMERICAN CARS, their reelable. I don't think so they seem ugh :yuck:. Mind if I ask what's you first car?

I guess it depends on how tall your grass is getting.

But, you live in the USA.

I wouldn't honestly buy anything but American built automobiles, I support domestic manufacturers!

As for my first car, well. That was technically a '78 Plymouth Horizon, but I never drove it. So I consider my first car the current one I own (Which is also the car I learned to drive on). My '85 Pontiac Parisienne. I also have an '88 Crown Vic which is going into a Demo derby. But it's not just mine, it's partly my friends as well, since we're doing it together.

None of these cars have given me any trouble. Mine has 220,000 Kilometers on the original 305 SBC and it runs like a top, fires up every morning in minus 5.

The LTD Crown Victoria has 393,XXX, KMS on the original EFI 302. Sure, it likes to puke oil, but it runs great still and always fires up. The mileage amounts to about 9 and 1/2 times around the earth.

My friend owned a loaded 1985 Buick Skylark. That never gave him any problems. I think it had 150,XXX KM when he sold it and was one of the smoothest cars to ride in, until I bought my Pontiac that is. :D

An Impreza will be expensive to insure.
And Volvo's are some of the safest cars in the world, they pioneered many of today's standard safety items.

An automatic-equipped STI is a waste of a perfectly good car. Terrible transmission.

You are not going to your license for atleast another 9-10 years and you can't join GTP until you are 13.

I'm 15 I'm just kidding my friend seriously you expect a 7 year old to be here??
I'm gonna get a car in about 2 years or less maybe a fixer upper and drive it around the country when I'm 18.

I would recommend a 250cc street bike. They are cheap to buy (less than $5,000 used), cheap to run (most get more than 45mpg, some 70+), and fun (self explanatory). There are two downsides; insurance is through the roof, and they aren't safe in a crash (but if you see it coming they are way easier to avoid).

Your a bike fan I see I can tell by your profile pic. I on the other hand am not dressing up to ride a bike is not my thing. I'm sorry I'm sticking with a car. I think I'll stick to an automatic that's what everyone's saying. Maybe later on ill get a Manuel, they seem a bit complicated. But, hopefully I will be able to drive one. One day ill hope to become a race car driver and maybe on my own race team. That's the end goal in theory. If this doesn't happen because I suck at Manuel I'm blaming it on you guys.

If I lived in a megacity, I'd buy a bicycle and use the metro. Owning a car just for the sake of owning a car seems silly to me.

American living in Canada?

I don't want to know who Manuel is, or how you suck at driving him. I'm assuming you mean manual is and it's really not that complicated to learn. Get an automatic though. I couldn't see any other place worse for a beginner. Also what kind of A4s are you looking at for 5 grand? I wouldn't go near an 5 grand A4 especially after Sandy.

Yea I've always loved bikes. I don't like putting on all of the gear but if it saves my life it was all worth it. If you are sticking with an automatic, try getting one that you can slide the shifter over and manually change gears. It will drive just like a manual without the clutch.
