little helpful hint, set your map zoom to 2-3, and it's like a radar. no more guessing where a car is, or using sidelook, just a quick glance at your map will tell you if you're clear to move over, very helpfull at the start of races too. try it out.
 
Always have it on at least 3 when I'm online.

Good idea. Never thought of that.
 
I've always left it off and use my mirrors or check in advance who's around me. If I check far enough before the corner and there is someone behind me, I know that they will stay behind me unless they are flying up on me from the insane draft this game has. It's the same as driving on a normal road really. Just keep glancing so when you have to make a move or avoid something, you already know where you can and cannot go.
