Marine Humvee Accident

Last night, a humvee with 8 U.S. Marines and 1 driver was heading out to training in Camp Lejune. As the humvee was going along, it ran into a log and lost control. A passenger was holding onto the side of the door, and due to this fact, accidentally opened the door as the humvee lost control. The passenger was flung out of the vehicle and into a ditch.

The humvee then proceeded to run into a tree at 40mph and almost flip over. This caused all occupants to be thrown out as there are no seat belts for the passengers.

As of today, 3 of the passengers were released from the hospital. This includes the Marine that was thrown from the vehicle into the ditch before it hit the tree.

The rest are still in the hospital...some are doing ok, but a lot of badly broken bones. Sadly, one Marine is in bad shape. He has a ruptured spleen, lungs, broken bones all over, and his face is badly mangled and lost both of his eyes.

Please, please pray for these United States Marines.

By the way, the Marine that was thrown from the humvee into the ditch is my brother.

Sorry to hear what had happened, how is your brother doing now?

I'm really speechless for this one.. :(

My brother is doing fine. He's on a lot of pain medication, and joked around about being awake when the shoulder was popped back into place. It hurt him quite a bit, but it was nice to hear him joking about it.

His main worry (besides the other Marines not doing well) is that if there is any permanent damage to his shoulder, he will most likely be discharged from the Marines. This would devastate him.

Glad to hear he's doing well. :)

If it was his life dream to be in the Marines, and then getting discharged? Man, that would suck. I hope things will get back to how it was before..

Glad to hear is is going to be fine. Let us know about the rest in a weeks time.

Prayers can't hurt, just don't forget about the men in Iraq loosing their lives, OK?:)

Best of luck to all of the Marines (I know better than to call them soldiers). I hope the guy with internal injuries pulls through.

I dislocated my shoulder in a motorcycle accident (handlebars and cow fencing don't mix) and suffered no permanent injury. Good luck to your brother.

..Why was a Humvee going so fast as to have someone so badly hurt as that one person with internal injuries and such?

Hope your brother and all his Marine buddies pull through. :)

I believe it was the driver who lost his eyes. Because there are no airbags, the driver flew foward and smashed into the steering wheel. Believe it or not, it doesn't take much speed to do a lot of damage. This, however, was at high-speed; about 40-50mph. Anything above 20mph is risk for a high MOA...Mechanism of Injury. I have a bad feeling that the front passengers who *may* have had seatbelts were not using them at the time. And the other guys in the back have no seatbelts, just benches. And the top of the humvee is open, so they all flew out. One guy was found hanging upside down in a tree.

Thanks for the strong support, everyone.

Godspeed to those Marines and to all who defend freedom.

Sounds pretty bad, I hope they all end up ok...I thought military vehicles would've had seatbelts though...:|

Indeed, Godspeed to the defenders of oil...I mean democracy.

But seriously I wish them all well, especially Matts brother.

This is plain horrible. No offence but I'd expect a court case for assisted suicide from this poor fellow. Personally I wouldn't want to live if this happened to me. Godspeed to him too.

i would be totally useless without my eyes. That would be just terrible without eyes and all them injuries. Could anyone imagine haning on to someone as they walk around or walk around freely having no idea where they are. Terrible terrible terrible. This log, was it around a blind corner or was the driver not paying attention or how did they hit that

In the kind of terrain that is sometimes covered in military excercises, that type of thing is bound to happen.

Terribly sorry about the tragic event. I hope your brother recovers well.

What an awful thing! I echo the sentiment of those above - it's pretty easy to get sucked into the big picture on this sort of stuff, but at the end of the day it's just average young guys out there getting hurt...

I'm astounded that there's no form of restraint inside the Hummer - given that they can travel at that sort of speed, and the type of terrain they're designed to travel over, it seems crazy to me that there'd be no form of seatbelts...

Best of luck to all of those involved.
