IGN
UK, March 28, 2007 - Finally the dreams of SEGA and Nintendo fans come true as news hits thats Mario and Sonic are set to star side by side in a new game for Wii and DS, based on the 2008 Olmypics.

SEGA made the historic announcement this morning and confirmed that Mario & Sonic at the Olympics (as it's known) is due for release this Christmas. The game's currently in development by SEGA Japan and Shigeru Miyamoto is supervising the project.

Players compete in events around venues based on official locations for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. Featuring a supporting cast of recognisable faces from the world of both Sonic and Mario, players can choose from a range of characters including Luigi, Knuckles, Yoshi, Tails and more.

My first thought was: WTF?

Not what I thought I'd see them together in first, but I'm very interested in this anyway. Especially since with the two combined plus the Olympic license, this thing is going to fly off the shelves. Hopefully. (assuming hardcore fans don't boycott the game since the 'other' mascot is in it :P)

But I think the most promising thing is that if they can work together in this game, they can definitely work together in another game *cough*Brawl*endcough*...right? 💡

Stop working on inferior games and get SSBB ready! I don't like Olympic video games. Who in the hell does?

Obvious answer is no, obvious solution is to be make everybody inexplicably equal a la the Mario Party series.

Theoretically each character could have their strengths and weaknesses in certain events but usually multiplayer party games even things out so you can play whoever you want and not have the short end of the stick.

Because, otherwise the games would turn into "Running's involved, so Sonic wins" or "Running's not involved, so Sonic loses" with a bunch of other minor characters being entertainingly mediocre.

I vote illogical plot hole. :dopey:

EDIT: IGN's put up an interview with some SEGA and Nintendo of Europe peoples in which absolutely nothing is confirmed. :grumpy: They say there are no plans about Sonic in Brawl.

Yet.

Or is it that they can't say anything, right? Right??

Think about this from a purist standpoint: Mario and Sonic. Rivals since either the late 1980s or 1990. They settle their differences... in Olympic competition? That's one way around it on a (hello!) Nintendo console. I think people would rather want to see Mario and Sonic finally go no holds barred (well, somewhat no holds barred. It would be out of the leagues of Mario and Sonic to have a non family-friendly title) in a game and settle a feud that's lasted since the SNES vs. Genesis wars. What would you rather see: Mario and Luigi vs. Sonic and Tails, or Mario and Sonic in a Triple Jump contest?

I'm not completely against this idea, but I do wish that Mario and Sonic get into some stuff in a Super Smash Bros. title. Mario's never missed a beat while Sonic has had varied success with the Sonic Adventure series. Why not Mario vs. Sonic? Come on, Nintendo players! Sonic vs. Mario in Super Smash Bros. Brawl! When's that gonna happen?
