BREAKING NEWS: FORMULA One ace Mark Webber has had a head-on collision with a car while riding his bike in Tasmania.

The Sunday Herald Sun has learned that at 12.30pm Webber, who drives for Red Bull Racing, collided with the car while riding south towards Port Arthur on the remote Tasmanian Peninsula.

Webber was competing in his own charity event, the Mark Webber Pure Tasmania Challenge.

Search and rescue police officer Damian Bidgood said Webber appeared to have a serious lower leg injury.

“Unfortunately he’s had a head-on,’’ Sgt Bidgood said.

“It will put him out of action for a while.’’

Rescuers are transporting Webber by road ambulance to a property known as Oakwood, just north of the site made infamous by gunman Martin Bryant during the 1996 Port Arthur massacre, Seascape.

A rescue helicopter is waiting on the oval at Port Arthur, just near the ruins of the historic convict site, waiting to fly to Oakwood to collect Webber.

He will then be flown to the Domain in Hobart and taken to hospital.

This is very bad news, hopefully it wont set him back too much next season. Apparently paramedics suspect a leg fracture. I don't really know anything about fractures, does anyone have an idea how long he'll be out of the cockpit?

O geez. My payers to Mark. I hope it isn't as bad as it seems. But it's very optimistic seeing how it was a head on collision. :indiff:

He has 3 months to recover, that means no testing whatsoever. Somebody will prob have to replace him for the first couple of races. Bad news.

Sorry to hear this :(

Hope the injuries are not as bad as first thought and he makes a quick recovery.

Oy... see this is just another reason I choose life over motorcycles.

Mark was riding a bicycle. The Mark Webber Challenge takes place in Tasmania and is pretty much a huge marathon on foot, bicycles and kayaks and spans over a few days.

EDIT: The Australian Broadcasting Corp. says he sustained multiple fractures to both arms and legs. :indiff:

O man. So he's like a rag doll now. Ohh boy..This might take a while.:guilty:

Ouch, well hopefully it is not anything serious like a head injury or anything but I wish Mark a speedy recovery. 👍 But that would seriously hurt his chance of testing the 09 car and getting used to the new car.......

Oh geez... Mark never has the best of luck. Hope he gets well real quickly, before the 2009 season.

That's real bad news 👎 :(

I had a hunch that something bad would happen to one of the drivers inbetween seasons. Although I didn't think it would actually happen.

Webber rode risky, but that's his hobby. I recall reading an interview full of pictures of him riding mountainbikes down muddy trails - and he admitted to have broken various bones over the years. Bike-riding is dangerous, but that's what he likes to do and, well, as long as he stays alive and well (after recovery), it's cool with me..

Get well soon. Perhaps this was the last bit of bad luck?

Autosport is saying it's a broken leg, that it's been operated on, that otherwise he's fine, and that he'll be out of the car of the rest of the year.

So he'll be ready for testing the definitive '09 car.

Woah, a close one there, I would be very sad to see Webber go I have to admit, so I hope he's back in time for '09.

If he makes it to the first Race then he'll probably struggle for the first part of the Season due to lack of testing.

Marks a Strong guy,so he should be able to bounce back from this.I wish him a speedy recovery

Sounds like he's got a bit lucky (if you can say that) with just a broken leg and some more minor injuries, could have been much worse.

Normal bone healing is 6-8 weeks, nearer 6 seeing how fit F1 drivers are. Then he'll have physio, etc. He's probably got about 2 months before the season starts once the leg has healed (about mid Jan, if all goes well). Tough break though.

Pun intended.

Shocking news, rarely do these sort of things happen to F1 drivers (except JP with his tennis *cough* incident).

Hopefully a speedy recovery.

Fantastic. Great to hear he wont miss any racing then. 👍

A broken limb bone is approximately 6 weeks to fix property as long as it's not a compound fracture. Either way he needs to maintain a good level of fitness (not easy with a broken leg) but the real issue is that his teammate now has the perfect opportunity to make sure the car is designed around him and when you've got a teammate like Webber has, that's a big problem.

I heard it on TV last night just as i closed this thread, i wish him all the best.

Even being of A1 fitness, 6 weeks of immobility in a leg, will take at least 3 weeks of re-hab before he could even begin to look at testing, hopefully this should be enough time for a full recovery in time for Aus GP. Wishing Mark a speedy recovery!!!!
