I'm sure there's a similar thread already out there, but I think they're a little more fragmented in content. For that reason... here's my list. I'm sure others have things to add. I'm interested in hearing.
To the mods, yeah there's negative feedback in the below, but think of it as constructive. That's the intent. Some of the frustration shows through, sorry for that, but so it is. PD has already acknowledged that there are issues, and have quickly made an effort to start to address in the form of the update. This is a solid gesture, and I'm writing the below in the hopes that PD picks up some insight from these forums and continues to listen to the people that play and enjoy their game. The best products are a result of listening to customer needs and wants. This is no different.
In starting, this is not to say that the game isnt without huge merits. Dont get me wrong, I absolutely love it for many many reasons, and commend PD on a massive victory in so many aspects. Its just that there seems to be as many cons as pros at the moment. And when the wait was this long, you obviously expect that its going to be pretty much buttoned down. Also a special nod to the photo mode and photo capabilities within. Its seems like a stupid little thing, but the care that went into the premium cars warrants something like this to do justice to the efforts. For people that see cars as art like myself, its a great aspect thats been further improved upon since last GT.
Secondly Im 30+ years old now and havent had the time to look into every nook and cranny to provide concrete feedback on every single game detail, as I simply havent had the seat time with the game that I would have been able to devote way back when I was a young chap playing GT2 until the sun came up for example. Motorsports Land rules by the way. An AWD car tuned just right was a riot on that track. Sorry I digress. So if some items listed below are erroneous, I do apologize. Further to that, Im sure theres some key items of frustration for many that Im overlooking myself. Sorry I did not do your pain justice. So below is the working list:
- This (part of the update) is offensive: Improved Rewards: The rewards for winning races in both A-Spec and B-Spec in [GT Mode]-[GT Life] have been increased for a limited time only. (This applies until the end of January 2011.) This is a great chance for those who were previously having difficulties getting ahead in the game, due to a lack of funds for tuning and purchasing required cars.
I have played the game up to level 21 on the old credit system and then this alteration comes out? Theres no provision to pay out retroactive as a lump sum to make up for the 21 levels I've done at the old lower money amount? Idiotic. Also, if they realize theres a problem with the ability to collect funds, why exactly does this alteration have an expiry date of Jan 2011? Senseless.
- B-Spec is BS. Plain and simple. This is a doers driving game, not a crew chief simulator. Wasted efforts and squandered resourced on this part of the game that could have gone into a better A-Spec experience. B-Spec was a bad idea in GT4 and it's just as bad an idea in GT5.
- The prize cars you win in A-Spec for the most part are insulting. In GTs past theyve been a mixed bag, but in GT5 theyre almost all tantamount to a kick in the junk.
- Forget fixating on 1000+ cars. I know that every car in the game doesnt need to be a 900 HP race prep'd monster, but stop the madness with 10 different versions of Toyota Vitzs or save your energy and get rid of the Vitz altogether and instead make a premium version of a car like a Jaguar XFR (just an example off the top of my head). Yes we need some level of civilian type vehicles to always be present for the benefit of some balance but I just saw a Nissan Pulsar with the rare optioned doggy canopy (known as an EXA in Japan by the looks of it) on the used car list. This car completely sums up how offside focus on what is important has gone in this installment of GT. Thoroughness and perfectionist completist attitude is great, but unless they find a way to include every car known to man since the start of cars, and in premium form, theyve got to please better pick their spots with a proper measure of sanity. 1000 cars, yeah thats great if it can be done with the right mix of cars, but were a long way from the right mix.
- Why is there painstaking detail put into the premium interiors, but you have no opportunity to sit in them and take a proper look around?
- There are issues with the jagged shadows and Im sure other graphics based items, but thats not my area of expertise, so theres no point in commenting. Maybe theres good reason why there are certain shortcomings. Jury is out on these issues.
- The credit accumulation system is absolute insanity. Making a game too easy to reach completion on is never a good thing, but grinding for dollars as Ive seen it called on this forum is obviously unanimously and rightfully loathed.
- Autoblog put this one very well Yes, the game does tell you what cars your opponents are likely to show up in, but there's no guarantee those cars haven't been modified and, unless you happen to have one of those exact autos, it's still a guessing game. Unless you want to waste time showing up with a knife to a gun fight, it's a lot easier to just build a bazooka and bring that along. They need to better bracket the cars. This would be an absolutely huge improvement and would make the game experience a lot more fun.
- Ditch the special event and license nonsense, and in place team up with Skip Barber racing schools or the like for a great immersive comprehensive staged tutorial on high performance driving skills. People prove their driving skills on the track, not trying to stop as quickly as possible within some checkered paint. Just because licenses are tradition, doesn't mean they need to continue to exist. Human sacrafice was a widespread tradition at one point in time in the world, but eventually that went away.
- Trimming some fat in other areas frees up resources to create more cars and respective races such as a Can-Am challenge? An IMSA GTU/GTO/GTP series? Some German touring car action? Some Aussie V8 Supercars at Bathurst? Some ALMS? Some Grand-AM DP/GT? Some NA Tuner Series such as Koni Challenge, or World Challenge Touring car. Some Trans-Am perhaps (newer and older alike)? Or Star Mazda open wheel? Not much effort on an open wheel like Star Mazda other than changing the colour of cars as its a spec series. I know there are potential licensing issues, but these racing bodies likely want nothing more than to be approached for the opportunity to expose their series to young enthusiasts. I am doubting thered be much resistance. What we have is PD looking at this franchise from a bubble in Japan. They would apparently rather model up what seems like 80 different Skylines and pointless 60 HP JDM micro cars or foolish 20 HP relics, instead of focusing in on pulling great racing culture from around the world. Yes there may be room for an automotive icon like the VW microbus, but not for a laundry list of toy cars. The cars and series I listed above is only from a North Am perspective, but Im fully inviting a more global approach to showcasing all the great types of racing.
- The pricing of cars both new and used seems to have little to no roots to reality. And what you are given when you sell a car is nothing short of robbery. Those whove played other GTs know this all too well however.
- Why does the engine note not change when you enter a tunnel? They went to the trouble to have your eyes readjust to coming out of a tunnel which was a nice touch, but your car sounds identical in a confined space? Glaring oversight.
- Inability to save multiple tune settings for one car is amazingly still not an option. Inability to save progress mid championship also a head scratcher.
- The rally portion of the game seems like an afterthought. The rally terrain doesnt remotely resemble reality, and why in rally is the map affixed basically to the roof of your car instead of off to the side? Unbelievably annoying and difficult to deal with.
- Based on what I can tell theres no way to cease the car from rotating in the garage, or zoom in on it, or change the lighting while looking at it. That is an annoyance. Again, they go to all the trouble to detail the car but you have to go into photo mode to appreciate it. There needs to be a quicker more convenient way to appreciate.
- Online play I cant comment on as I have not yet experimented
- They need to in some cases show a little more respect to the manufs. It is blasphemous to be able to put a massive JDM wing on a German car (just one example). Or a flame blued titanium exhaust tipped exit pipe on anything your heart desires. You can even put a spoiler on top of an existing spoiler from what Ive seen (RUF Yellowbird for example). Absolutely absurd.
- Do racing soft tires really need to be as expensive as a midsized car?
- The my home screen is an abomination to graphical layout and has about the same level of logic as an angry woman, and is about as pretty as an angry bearded woman.
- The garage should be more customizable. You should be able to group cars to your liking in warehouses or something. Im sure theres a few other ways the garage layout could benefit but its late and Im drawing a blank.
- Rim selection is frustrating. Theyll somehow allow you to put a park bench style spoiler on a luxury sedan but you wont have all the rim options in the game available to you for that same car? You also can't see the rims close up before purchase. You should also be able to see a preview of how your car will look when you are about to paint the rims or bodyshell.
- Why can you not execute a burnout or a donut given the physics engine is supposed to be so superior?
