having got myself caught up in all the excitement over gt4's endurance races - especially the 24hr ones - i ventured into town at lunchtime and for some unknown reason i purchased the le mans 24 hour game which infogrames released about 4 years ago. is this going to be 5 pounds wasted or a sound investment?

If the PS2 port is good then it should be a sound investment! The Sega Dreamcast version was awesome, one of my favorite games released on the console! It was released under the name "Test Drive - Le Mans" here in the US and was a great racing game along with Ferarri F355 Challenge. There were lots of cars in each race and you could even race the 24hrs of Le Mans (in real 24hr time) and the game time would change from day to night. There were also lots of real world tracks including Le Mans, Donnington, and Catalunya.

Here's the bottem line quote from Gamespot....

While it is a top-notch racing game in every respect, its release a week after Gran Turismo 3's launch makes it victim to either fortuity or poor planning on Infogrames' part. While these games might not appeal to the same exact quotient of the market, they're close enough in composition to effectively neutralize each other. Still, Le Mans 24 is a damn good game, and no Gran Turismo can change that.

I'm thinking about picking this one up myself now. Let us know what you think.

and the verdict after a brief 15 minute play at the weekend is *drumroll*........................................

it's actually not bad at all. i was expecting it to be a crock of **** but was pleasantly surprised. obviously it's no gt4 (or even gt3) but then it's a completely different kind of driving game so you can't compare them.

a fewthings it does have over the gt series are:

*day/night and weather effects
*the pit sequences are better (in my opinion)
*you can save mid-race

looking forward to playing it more over the next few days

I remember hiring(sp?) it once. My step brother and I had alot of fun playing it.
