Mazda endurance race impossible?

on the mazda endurance race, you are allowed 3 mazda miata race car types and NOT allowed to tune it in anyway.

well, heres the thing:
cars 2-6 are normal cars. you can pass them, they pass you etc. good competition. but the car in 1st place goes LIGHT SPEED and is about 7-9 seconds ahead of everyone. its impossible to get even near him.

im guessing its a bug, or there is a trick to beat this. anyone ever beat this race?
 
I realize that it's a little late to be responding to a post this old... I felt, however, that it deserved a reply.

First of all, just in case you didn't know, you *can* use racing tires. They don't count tires as having a tuned car.

I actually beat this race last night. I was an entire lap ahead of the Miata LS. I was using a Miata LS myself, by the way.

The 5 regular cars aren't much a problem, as you said, but the 1 LS is. From my experience, he will pit in at the end of every 3rd lap. Even if you aren't very good at driving as carefully as the AI does, just be sure to use Super-Slick tires, and don't pit in until one of the tires turns orange. You'll end up pitting in far less than he will (for me, I was pitting in every 7th or 8th lap).
