I've been racing the Mazda Furai recently... with Praiano's 650pp tune (many thanks, Praiano!). This car is awesome and dominates the 650pp Super races. I've also won easily using it in the 750pp 24-min Spa race and the 720-750pp races in International A. It is very easy on tires and fuel for the endurance races but doesn't rely on that alone... the handling is fantastic!
My question is... I haven't been able to win the 24-min Le Mans with it thus far... I just cant get enough top speed and so far I still have to pit twice for this race, even though the fuel economy will almost (not quite) go 4 laps. I've added the hi-speed turbo, reduced the downforce and tweaked the final gear to get to ~200mph but that's about the limit.
I'm not having any problem with tire wear... I'm simply not able to catch the lead cars... I gain some time during the curves but lose time on the straights. The fuel economy is better than any of my LMP cars (Peugeot 905, Audi R8 race car, Pescarolo C60 hybrid) but not quite enough to make it 4 laps. I'm running a modified version of Praiano's 650pp tune, with the high speed turbo added, downforce set at 175/300 and final gear at 2.7 to eke out a bit more speed on the straights but ~205mph is about tops. My lap times are in the 3:55 range, not counting pits, and I run out of time before lap 7.
I'm not an expert driver but I've won Le Mans repeatedly with my LMP cars, just cant quite pull it off with the Furai yet.
I'll bet that several folks out there have pulled this off. Any suggestions? Might just be my driving style (or lack thereof) that's holding me back.
