The production car will of course be rotary-powered, as it has been ever since the model’s debut in 1978, and with a brand-new Wankel engine developed in part to celebrate Mazda’s admirable 40 year history with this technology.

The new engine will feature direct injection and turbocharged for its RX-7 application; expect it to have a power outputl in excess of 250bhp. Its twin chambers are of 800cc rather than the RX-8’s 654cc, producing an equivalent capacity of 3.2 litres.

The RX-7 will provide a smaller, lighter and more overtly sporty alternative to the new RX-8. That car, which will also get the new rotary engine, will continue as a four-seater but will probably grow to become more of a GT car to distance itself from the RX-7.

amen. but that's still mere artist rendering.. it'll be a lot more tamer than that, I hope. I loved the RX-7's simple, clean and smooth design..

I'd love to see the FE3S look as clean and smooth as the FD3S, and not have an Acura "taped up" grille like on the RDX and that concept. (What's with that, anyway? looking for more downforce? [/NASCAR reference])

I'm also hoping this 18B engine will make the damn thing as much of a screamer as the FD was, too. If not....well, there's always 20B swaps...

I hope they bring back some of the FC's edginess.

Fixed.;)

Dear god I hope not, I hope they never bring the 7 back, as much as I love my 7's (my FC especially:D) I highly doubt mazda could pull it off anymore. The SA, FC, and FD all looked similar in a way and had pop ups, this car will look nothing like any of the three and will not have the classic pop ups. I love the idea, but please don't call this an RX-7. Hell call it an RX-9 or something.

I agree, it should be called the RX-9. Move on, Mazda, you'll never be able to truly satisfy those of us who want the RX-7 back.

At least it seems that Mazda finally realized that they need to build something faster. The RX-8 would make more sense as a modern Cosmo ("more of a GT car" as the article hinted) anyway.

I'd love to see the FE3S look as clean and smooth as the FD3S
The RX-8 is the SE3P. I imagine this new RX-7/RX-9/whatever will have an "F" for the second digit.
