McLaren Artura Unveiled: All-New 670hp Plug-In Hybrid Supercar

Catchpole's first impressions as well

Seems like the car isn't as good as people have hoped. The e-diff is really good, but the car isn't as raw as the 296. This is a much more refined and road focused than the Ferrari. Also, during pre-production, there seems to have been a lot of reliability problems. Bovingdon from Evo said he had to evacuate the car when he was on track when testing it

Unveiled today before arriving at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, its race car equivalent shaves off 130 kg (287 lbs) to comply with GT4 regulations that don't allow hybrids.

At the same time, the Artura GT4 is more than 100 kg (220 lbs) lighter than the 570S GT4 it replaces. Switching from a V8 to a more compact V6 has also contributed to the diet, and the six-cylinder unit alone is powerful enough to make the track-only machine competitive. The battery pack fitted to the road car has now made way for the 110-liter (29-gallon) fuel cell and ancillary drive system. By repurposing the same space, McLaren says that weight continues to be low and in the center for better balance.

Aside from the simplified powertrain, the Artura GT4 gets a different seven-speed gearbox to replace the eight-speed automatic in the road car where the electric motor is used for reverse. It gets shorter gear ratios than its predecessor along with a rear-mounted mechanical limited-slip differential while reducing brake wear at the back. Fuel consumption is also down, while braking cooling efficiency is up.

Naturally, the motorsport variant gets a far more aggressive aerodynamic kit enabling greater downforce compared to the outgoing 570S GT4. McLaren has conceived a bespoke front splitter and a new rear wing with seven levels of adjustability to fit various types of tracks.

I got an invite from my local dealership to take one on a test drive.

It’s ****ing fast.

Previously I’d only sat in a couple exotics, and the most power I’d ever been allowed to be responsible for was a base Tesla model 3 and Porsche Taycan, which obviously are EVs, but also have very strict traction control. This thing will apparently spin the rears at 70+ mph if you ask it to.

This was my first drive in something considered a supercar, mid engine, and paddle shifted, so it was kind of a sensory overload for most of the 30 minutes I got with it, but holy crap, the precision and fidelity of everything is just next level. Punching it at just the right spot where you get both the EV and peak combustion force is unbelievable.

Incredibly smooth ride and comfortable seating too, so smooth in fact that I had it in track mode and didn’t notice I was sitting at 80mph. :scared::scared:

The green one I drove had a really cool grey+white interior spec.
