I just bought the 94' McLaren F1 and i am hugely disappointed.
The sound is awful. It sounds like a low-compression turbo V6, without the turbo sound.:grumpy:
The gearing is all wrong and ruins the whole car.
4000 rpm in 6th gives you approx 245 kph wich translates to a theoretical top speed of 490 kph! Polyphony got the gaps in the gears right but adjusted the final ratio 100 kph too tall. stretching 5th gear to 345 kph in the tunnel at ssr7
i shifted up to 6th gear and the car decelarated:grumpy:
If i was the CEO of McLaren i would give polyphony a very angry call.
Anyway this is not the first time Polyphony ruins a great car with rookie mistakes. Remeber the Pagani Zonda in GT3 or GT4? It hit the rev limiter in 6th @ 240 kph! Or the Golf 5 GTI in GT4 wich had the same gear ratios for 4th and 5th gear:tdown:
And the M3 CSL wich sounds like a lazy V6:yuck:
There are lots of cars with these kind of mistakes i'm sure so go ahead and list them all for me:nervous: maybe someone at polyphony cathes up and does something about it before making an Iphone app for B-spec or whatever:grumpy:

I did 246 MPH in my F1 at Sarthe. That is faster than a number of pretty fast race cars in this game.

The braking is also better than a number of fast race cars. I use Rome as one of my grinders and the F1 brakes as well as any car in the game.

Kaz has Twittered that custom ratios are on the way.

I never really thought the gearbox is all wrong, but I did wonder that I can reach more than 90 mph in 1st gear, and that the car doesn't even come close to topping out in 6th gear. According to Wiki, the car should top out at 231 mph because of the rev limiter at 7,500 rpm. The long-time record of 243 mph was done with the limiter off.

The problem besides that I love(d) the car in the game is that a custom gearbox, even if they fix the bug, is no real solution because of the very loud whine.

They do have a way of screwing up everything I like about this game.

The in gear speeds for the McLaren F1 with the standard 7500 rev limiter is as follows:
1. - 105 kph
2. - 155 kph
3. - 190 kph
4. - 240 kph
5. - 290 kph
6. - 371 kph

the 391 kph record was done without the rev limiter and with the catalystic converters removed. Anywaqy, it's just the final gear ratio that is wrong. The gaps in the gears seems right. this is the reason it chockes in 6th, cause the gap from 5.-6. is wide.

That whine is actually quite accurate, but yes...annoying. The F1 is a very noisy car. Maybe they could emphasize the exhaust note a little more though???

The F1 is a noisy car, and the whine of a racing gearbox is realistic. My point however was that in order to experience the car as it really is, I would need to install a fully customizable gearbox, because PD shuffled up the numbers. If I do that however, I will be facing said gearbox whine, which takes away the originality of the car to some extent. So when I fix one of their bugs to make the car realistic, I take away realism at another end.

I own 2 of these, one "super-stock" and one fully race tuned.

My biggest gripe with what's holding the car back is the clutch. It takes an astonishingly long time to change gears. It's a real no-nonsense perfectionist car.

I was wondering why this car was bothering me so much. The Ferrari F40 does too. It gets to like 70 in 1st gear which can't be how it is in reality??? It's annoying because it never downshifts because 1st gear is so long.

OHHH I see what you mean, yes very large flaw in my opinion. Its just like the titanium pipe. Makes all cars sound identical.:grumpy:

I checked the speeds for the individual gears in the game. Note that the rev limiter cuts power not earlier than at 8,000 rpm, but the redline begins at 7,500 rpm. I think we're talking about the same thing though, so here are the speeds for each gear at 7,500 rpm:

1. ~ 130 kph
2. ~ 190 kph
3. ~ 243 kph
4. ~ 295 kph
5. ~ 355 kph
6. ~ unknown kph

The car stops accelerating at about 355 kph (tested on SSR7) in 5th gear. As you said, shifting into 6th actually makes it slow down again.

Too bad they screwed this one up, I was very much looking forward to this car in its stock form in the game. :indiff:

EDIT:
I crosschecked the gear ratios of the original gearbox in the game with real world data and found that they match perfectly, even the final drive ratio. Still, this obviously is completely off the mark in the game. I don't really understand this since all the numbers are absolutely correct.

Also, I put in a customizable gearbox to see whether it can emulate the real world gearbox. I'm afraid it can't. If you put the top speed correctly the first gears are much too short. Bad luck I guess...
