The MCL-HY is McLaren's first factory effort at the top-flight of endurance racing.
People will remember how McLaren won their very first Le Mans overall in 1995 using a GT race car in the form of the F1 GTR, during a very wet Le Mans, of which such a feat is unlikely to ever be repeated, where the prototypes struggled that year. Since then, McLaren has not competed in any major endurance races with prototypes, only with GT cars, until they expressed a desire to do so with the MCL-HY set to compete in 2027.
The MCL-HY is an LMDh which uses a Dallara chassis, and is powered by a 2.9-litre twin-turbocharged V6 engine paired to an LMDh-spec hybrid system to be compliant with FIA WEC and IMSA regulations. As for its aerodynamic styling, it is reminiscent of some of their Ultimate Series cars, namely the Senna and Sabre, in particular, with its headlight design and front fascia.
As for its racing efforts, McLaren are set to partner with the American racing team, United Autosports, to become their partners for their factory team running the MCL-HY in preparation for the 2027 FIA WEC season.
McLaren are also set on producing a track-only version of the car, the MCL-HY GTR, which is nearly identical to the race car in every single way, but only sold to select customers.
