"Leave a Message"
by: Greg Goodrich
May 5, 2010

The making of our “Leave A Message” trailer started with a simple concept and a very straightforward execution.

Everyone involved in creating the trailer was in complete agreement from the very beginning. We had three simple
goals. We wanted to be authentic, we wanted to be respectful, and most of all, we wanted to give a special nod
to Steven Spielberg, who created the Medal of Honor franchise over a decade ago.

The best way we knew how to do this, was to recreate the Omaha Beach landing with Jimmy Patterson. Except
now, instead of arriving on the shores of occupied France in the hull of a Higgins boat, our Ranger would arrive in
the Shahi-Kot Valley, in Afghanistan’s Paktia province, in the modern day equivalent, the CH-47 Chinook helicopter.
Basically, Normandy in the desert.

Since the entire piece is taken directly from the opening of the first Ranger mission in our game, creating the first
pass of our trailer was quick and easy. We simply slowed the animation down and removed a few scenes that
didn’t fit within the message. The entire untouched scene at regular speed remains in the final product.

There is a wonderful gag in the middle of the scene where one of the Rangers actually begins to realize that things
seem very familiar to him. When it finally dawns on him that he is basically reliving the D-Day landing from
“Saving Private Ryan” he quickly notices that he is sitting closest to the loading ramp at the rear of the fuselage.
He then taps one of his teammates on the shoulder and says, “Hey, I’ve seen this movie, you sit here!” and then
trades places with the young Ranger.

The actual phone message Jim leaves for his family back home changed after we showed it to one of our military
consultants. When he first heard the message, he offered up a dose of reality. He explained to us that when you
are deployed and in harm’s way, you tell your loved ones whatever they need to hear to keep them from worrying.
Even when you are moments away from stepping outside the wire to conduct a raid or begin a major offensive,
you never disclose anything. You assure them that you are fine and that you will be fine, knowing it will help them
sleep at night. We let this information settle in for a few hours and then we rewrote the dialog to what you hear now.

After the trailer was completed we showed it to a select group of individuals to get their reaction. We showed it to
the wife of a Marine who had recently returned home. We showed it to our significant others and our families. We
then showed it to senior officials within the U.S. Army. It was late one afternoon and our liaison, Lieutenant
Colonel Greg Bishop, had brought a colleague of his from the U.S Army Public Affairs Office to meet with us, see
our game and get a tour of our facility. We stopped by the theater and I surprised them with a private viewing of
the trailer. At the end of the piece, the room was silent. He then stood, pointed at the screen and said very
matter-of-factly, “That right there gentleman is the reason we are working with this team, and why the U.S. Army
will continue to support Medal of Honor.”

Needless to say, it was a very rewarding day.

I think the trailer is inspired by a real event that actually happened. I read about this some months back and it
even has a documentary on Youtube. 15 soldiers died and more than 80 wounded. 2 Chinook choppers were shotdown.

Did not know DICE was behind this one 👍
Loved Bad Company 1&2 so I'm definitely going to keep tabs on this one.

Apparently Respawn are collaborating with Dice in this on the final clean up and check adding little inputs here and there. Apparently the relationship is much more friendly then that held between IW and Treyarch

Nice one Masi..... But I thought Dice was only doing the online portion of the game and a different development company was making the rest of the game... But guess I misunderstood the article I was reading....

Its being made by two different companies actually. EA Los Angeles is making the single player portion which uses the Unreal engine and Dice is making the multiplayer which uses the Frost engine. Its going to be different aiming, speed, and feel in general when it comes to going from single player to multiplayer, which will be kind of weird. Its nice to have two companies working on it in a way though, since they are able to focus entirely on one aspect of the game it might work out well for us.

^^^^ Thats quite interesting... Using two different engines for each portion of the game... I am curious as to how that will unfold...

Yes, what breakpoint said :)

It's interesting to say the least.

EA to be in the Medal of Honor business "for a long time"
by Mike Harradence

Frank Gibeau, president of EA Games, has declared that the publisher intends on sticking with the Medal of Honor brand for “a long time,” hoping to re-establish the franchise within the Top 10 following lacklustre sales of MoH: Airborne
.
“With Medal of Honor, we’re rebooting the series to get into the top 10,” said Gibeau, during a chinwag with the folks at Gamasutra.

“I was not satisfied with the sales of Airborne, and it was a project that I inherited when I came into this label, and at the very last minute. We basically had a month on it. So I looked at the future of what I wanted to build inside of the Games label, and we want to be the worldwide leaders in the shooter category, full stop.”

“We’re going to be in the Medal of Honor business for a long time. It helped build the genre in terms of the shooter category. When we talk to consumers on the research level, there’s still a very strong, positive feeling about the brand. It did fall on hard times there, but the goal is to bring it back in a bigger, better, badder way.”

Just in case you’ve been kipping under a rock for the past couple of months, Medal of Honor marks the series’ transition from WWII-era combat to the more contemporary shenanigans of modern-day Afghanistan. It'll also utilize two game engines -- Unreal Engine 3 for the single player, and the Frostbite Engine for the multiplayer.

As revealed by the chaps at EA yesterday, the game is pencilled in for release in the United States on October 12, and will hit Europe on October 15.

I really do hope it is going to be better than new CoD. I look forward to see some new trailers!

Here's an interview that confirms a few things (Actual gameplay/cinematic near the start of the vid)

They mention that their will be destruction in both Single Player and Multiplayer, but did
phrase that he, "...won't confirm if you'll be destroying them enough, but yes, there will
be destruction!" Also, present are vehicles such as ATVs and the Apaches :)

If you're a bit impatient, there's more Gameplay/Cinematic Scenes starting at the 4:00
minute mark until the end of the video. As far as i can tell, it looks better than BC2 :)

Wow, very nice. Will be heading to gamestop for a pre-order code tomorrow, seeing how I play BF2 quite a bit I can start on the 17th 👍 (Did I mention I was off on Thursday? )

I'm thinking of pre ordering from Amazon. What's the charge to pre order from them?

So I pre ordered it and they said the code would be emailed on the 21st! I want my early access on the 17th. RAWR

I've just emailed Amazon with a link and prt scrn of the Gun Club website stating that I'm entitled to early access starting the 17th. Hopefully I get a reply and/or code ASAP. I also get early access to the M24.

I'll be purchasing the special edition for the re-release of Frontline. I LOVE that game, still play it once a month at least. (between sessions of GT4 and 5:Prologue)

You've got to pre-order.

The game is fun. The American team is OP'd and if you are any good don't play as the Russians. Once you reach a three kill streak the game will freeze.

Well, it says you can get a key if you own BC2, but i tried and i get "Key alread used, etc"

Maybe im doin something wrong? IDK. Anyway, from the looks of it, the multiplayer looks very similar to BC, which isn't necessarily a bad thing really.

To get acces to the beta, you need to preorder the game i think. (cancel after if you want)

The game itself is between BFbC2 and CODMW2. Shooting is more easy than in BF (so more on the MW2 front). Looks a lot like BF, plays like it

Very fast paced game.

Beta 2 levels : kabul for TDM & a valley for mission based

I like the demo. Played a lot yesterday (got my key then)

Masi : Could you change the title of the thread so betaplayers will join in the thread.

I play it on PC. Someone else??? (I need a squad!!!)

I play on PS3 and I'm hesitant to keep playing it for fear of my hdd being corrupted.

It just looks like BF:2 with different maps to me o_O

It looks like BF2 with the recoil switched off trying to imitate CoD.

Yes BFBC2 is by far a lot better.
but it's just a beta, so there will be plenty stuff to come

I recanceled my preorder and if it doesn't come with a strong singleplayer, i will not buy it.

I got a Beta Code today via email, did anyone else get an invitation? I didn't preorder the game either. My guess is they are starting an open beta now?

I might play with you tonight if you want, considering my mic wasn't working in that game in the first place.

I saw you online playing. I downloaded it on my PS3 in the living room, then downloaded the patch. By the time everything finished we had to run, went to a friends to take the kid's offroad go carting. I started downloading the Beta on the second PS3 when we left. When I went to play last night it told me I had to wait 24hrs till it would be unlocked since I loaded it on a second PS3. What the hell? I did it on BBC2 with no issues, Hopefully I will get to try it tonight.

Il have to admit, it looks good. Hasn't been a decent MOH since Frontline on the PS2, and since MW2 left me with a sour taste in my mouth, I will be checking this one out.

I played about ~5 rounds last night in Kabul City (Death Match). Had to get used to controls, Felt like COD to me. No lag felt or seen, but killing someone took like half a clip, but when I got shot it was like 1 or 2 shots? Hard to tell if you kill someone before they killed you. My first impression: a cross between BBC2 and COD. Will have to play a bit more to get a feel and more honest opinion. I'm borrowing someone's Quote but so far it feels like a paint ball match! The blood border around the screen when you get shot strengthens this analogy.

Bring on BBC2 Vietnam!
