Does anyone hear work in the medical field or are training to work in that field. I'm only 15 and at where I go to school we have what's called the Health Academy and it's a special program for kids that want (or think they want) to work in the medical field. I figured out in 8th grade that I wanted to be a Physicians Assistant. With only 7 years of school (compared to a doctor) and a starting salary of 56,000 (and up to 105,00) I think it's the right road for me. Don't ask me why I don't want to be a doctor because I just know (toooo much schooling for one thing. I wouldn't get to be a full doctor until I was like 30 or something like that). I don't know if a P.A. can work in a specific field (I'll go look it up as soon as I finish this) but If they can I'd have to choose orthopedics. I think that orthopedics is just very intresting (for lack of a better word) to me. I'm currently taking Anatomy and Physiology and I'm loving every freakin' minute of that 50 minute class. I trip myself out because sometimes I'll just go read my textbook instead of playing the PS2!!

But anyway, I just wanted to know it any of you guys were in the medical field or if you even like medicine (post whatever you have to say about it, I don't care) and If you have any advice. Thanks.
 
I was in AP Biology last year. I found the human anatomy chapters rather boring. The ecosystems/evolution chapters were much more fun. I'm officially god at that subject, by the way. 5 on the AP test, 800 on the SAT II. That class rocked.
 
I like to stop and think sometimes about just how much stuff is going on in your body all of the time. That burger you ate for lunch is being digested and all the chemicals are being taken from that burger and are being used or stored up, Your heart is pumping blood throughout your body right now and it'll never stop until you die. There are muscles that are contracted and relaxing as you type. I could go on and on. I just think it's awesome. I love to think about it for a while.
 
Well... Biology is kinda like physics and chemistry.... they all relate to life in one way or another... just so happens that bio relates alot more because of the human body.

Right. You're such a simpleton. Until you start thinking about the sheer number of atomic reactions going on in the human body, you haven't lived. I do that all the time. I usually try to count, then lose count because of all the Sodium and Potassium that keeps getting displaced as I try and store the number. It seems impossible.
 
I do think about the antomic reactions, I just chose not to talk about that. It's much more difficult to comprehend molecules and things like that because they're so small. It's hard to picture (at least for me) a molecule of Potassium or Sodium.

Also I think there was no reason to call me a simpleton. Do I just come off sounding like an idiot or something? It's hard for me to type exactly what I think, o.k jeez.

Sodium and potassium are ions, not molecules. ;)

I wanted to be a Neuro surgeon when I gre up, but I'm 13, what do I know?
Now I want to be a computer programmer, go figure.

Well, it's kind of hard to tell by just reading that you were being sarcastic.

And actually we are both wrong. Potassium and Sodium are both elements, neither ions or molecules. (I think. There's a diff. right?)

When I had Biology H. last year I was young and stupid and immediantly dismisssed Cellular respiration because I didn't understand it right off the bat. I wish I could take it again because I think I'd understand it a lot better. I could never get the Calvin cycle and stuff like that. . An H ion is formed here and a phosphate is dropped here?!?! I never got It. But next year I'll be taking AP Biology so I'll have a chance to redeem myself.

No, they're ions. At least, they are in the form that we are speaking of. Only the noble gases exist as elements in nature. We're talking about Na+ and K+.
 
Chemistry is a fascinating subject, pity I didn't pay much attention this year :(.

Physics, well thats just a pain in the arse.
 
im taking bio ap 12 this year....im aiming for that 4 or 5 so i can get outta taking first year science....stupid bell curve. i enjoy it a lot. probably one of my favourite subjects aside form 3d animation. im aiming ot become a general dentist someday and then specialize into orthodontics. over her in bc the starting salary for an orthodontist with his/her ow clinic is 350,000+ CDN. and that only if you have ONE clinic. its about 3 years sciences, 4 years general dentistry, then 2 years t specialize ito orthodontics. even after the 7 yers when ur a general dentist, with ur own clinic ur stil averaging about 200,000 a year. so yeha....that could make my dreams of owing a ferrari 360 come true VERY fast.
 
I'm a drug dealer....err....pharmacy tech....and I'm going ot be a pharmacist....5 years of school and 100,000 a year starting plus a 25,000 bonus for signing on for 2-3 years (some companies will give you a BMW and if you stay more than 5 years you can keep it)....plus you only work 3-4 days a week. same hours and if you choose the right place you dont' even have to SEE or talk to the people you deal with...you listen to music while you fill ;) not bad...and it gets me close to my skyline.
 
I don't like people in general that much even when they're well. I'd never have the patience and understanding to deal with sick people all the time.

My brother-in-law was going to school to be a PA. Then he changed to Nurse Practitioner. He claims he'll make 70.00 an hour.

Having aspirations for the medical field is quite noble. I too wanted to be a doc when I was younger. The amount of schooling is not what put me off though.
From the time I was 16 til I graduated from High School. I worked in an ice skating rink. It was actually the sight of all that blood on the ice when some guy went down, got skated into (Ice skates are quite sharp BTW), and got his head gashed open really badly. I was finished off by a guy getting his hand cut open (base of pinky to base of thumb) when the blad to the Zamboni slipped when we were trying to change it.

I also have something that most docs don't that would have been a liability in my training.....a personality.

Anyway, You might also consider being a nurse practitioner. Yes you have to go to nursing school first. However, once you finish nursing school, and pass Boards, you are instantly employable. And can use that employment to pay for further education. Plus most hospitals, or Health care systems that employ nurses have tuition reimbursment programs for further education.

I is actually "easier" to become a PA than it is to be come a Nurse practitioner. However, If you get half way done and decide you don't want to be a PA, you don't hae a marketable skill. At the halfway point to becoming a Nurse Practitioner, you have either a BSN or an ADN. You then have to pass Boards to become licensed. And, Viola! you are employable, in a relatively good paying job.
 
The reason I ask is because my brother-in-law is sort of a... how shall I put it delicately... a bum who lives off of my sister. He has been in school to become a PA for a while. Now he says he's changing to nurse practitioner, which I assumed would be an seamless transition, until now. So it looks like my sister will be his sugar mommy for even longer.

I should say he has never had a real job, ever, and he's 31. That's why I call him a bum because he lives in a nice house and drives a brand new truck and has the god damned yankee workshop in his garage, not to mention the giant flat screen... and he's never had a job. Meanwhile, I go to work every day and go to school and have a kid. But I drive a five year old car and watch a lowly tube TV and have to borrow tools to make my kid a sandbox because I do not have a garage full of expensive, brand name power tools.

Well that was off topic. Sorry. Had to vent a little.

What I was going to do was get my RN degree (4yrs) and then go to the 2 yrs. of PA school. If I don't like P.A school I can be a nurse. But I really hope I like P.A school because I don't like a 43,000 salary (Not that I'm in it for the money but I just think that being a P.A would be better b/c you can do stuff like make tentative (sp?) diagnoses and can prescribe some meds and you just have a bit for freedom)

How does a dude with no visible means of support, manage to have all that stuff?
It is irksome for a wombat like that to have everything, while doing nothing. Especially if you are bustin' your furry butt to eke out a modest existence.

I have to ask, Is he doing something illicit/illegal? Or is he playin' a dozen different women that are well off and stupid?
Your job, is to protect your wife and child, while not screwing with the family dynamic between her and her bro. (In other words, watch her back, and don't interfere unless there is obvious potential for danger to your wife. I personally, would rather cross the mouth of mount St. Helen's on a spiderweb...

So in essence he's drivin' around in your truck?! and eating steak that should be on your table.

Maybe it's time for some "tough love."
He won't ever grow up if he continues to be allowed to be a bum.
