You want a roadster to enjoy the sunny day outside? Ready to feel the wind blow through your hair? Want to enjoy it all? Meet Caterham. This car company is best known for their British roadsters that do more than provide roadster excitement. In fact, they can be bigtime weapons on track. What I like most about these Caterham roadsters is that they carry that 1960s F1 car look. And since I think they were first made in the 1970s and associated with Lotus, they've long been good club race cars in Europe. I think I heard that one such Caterham had that distinctive roadster look, and packed 600+ horsepower. Meaning that, it's a British hot rod. Who knows? They may out-corner a few sports cars and hold its own against select supercars and superexotics.

Based on (http://www.caterham.co.uk/showroom/index.htm), the Caterham Superlight has some rather astounding performance numbers. Check this out. The Superlight has engines that range from a 1.8L, 160 bhp motor to a 1.8L, 230 bhp motor. With its lightweight and capable engine, it can do 0-60 mph in 4.6 seconds. In England, Factory Build is 24,750 pounds, while a self-build is worth 22,250 pounds. How many stock American muscle cars can pull THIS off? Not to mention these are basically like 2-seater F1 cars. I know my buddy McLaren'sAngel is into the McLaren F1 (and calls it her IDEAL car! Imagine that!), but these are more like old-school F1 cars that can be taken back to your garage to own the road any other time.

I've opened this thread to discuss Caterham, but I will also invite other sweet roadsters like these I've discussed. So you have something to add? Come on down!
 
I love Caterhams, actually i just love anything with the Seven shape, whether it be a Westfield, Elfin, etc.

I love the simplicity of them. There's no need for massive horse power (but you can always have a bit more ;) ) and low weight means that you don't need lots of fancy electronics to stop it feeling like a barge to drive. Seven's provide so many options in power plants with motorcycle engines all the way through to V8s being used.

Considering the capabilities of some of these cars their prices aren't particularily high. Well, that is if you are prepared to build one yourself, something i've always wanted to do. Maybe when i graduate from uni.............
 
I've ridden in a tiger cat E1, which is a repro lotus 7, It was a blast. the whole time I was plastered to the seat. damn fast little thing.

I know that us here in America like restoring hot rods and putting in b*tchin' small and big block motors in them. But to me, nothing beats one of those Super Sevens. They kind of make for the ultimate track cars for the street. And Ultrabeat, thanks for mentioning the car I was pondering about before coming up with this topic. I guess I should have called this topic "Meet the Lotus Super Seven and Caterham and other British Roadsters," since I hear of the Super Seven with this.

I think with more power and rigidity, it can be a Le Mans car. I mean, imagine that car blasting down Mulsanne! It could be so fast that it can pass three, if not four cars in one lap. That Caterham R500 Evolution is everything a sports car should be- fast, powerful (enough), and affordable.

I think in America, that's the concept behind American muscle cars (expect future thread on this). All the Americans who care about horsepower and performance want to hit the 'strips. So car designers formulate cars to have people scratch those itches. You get the Challenger, Mustang, Camaro, AMC Rebel, and all them. But that bit of British metal is pretty much an affordable package. In a 2002 "Road and Track" magazine ad, it featured a Superformance machine similar to the Super 7 that sold for about $22,000 or $23K. YOU CAN'T BEAT THAT! You know what you're getting with Caterham.

I love caterhams, but they would be crap at LeMans - their aerodynamics are awful, EVO tested a top-of-the-range caterham the other month and failed to get it above 150ish mph, at LeMans it would die a death. Caterham have toyed with 'winged' and 'venturied' versions recently, but they weren't much quicker and looked dreadful. I doubt they could sell enough 'aero' Caterhams to be able to homologate it for LeMans. Caterham brought out a aerodynamic, full-bodied car based on the seven's chassis called the 21(?) - but people didn't want them.
