Well it happened to me finally. I got the YLOD. At least I think that's what it is. I was in a race, had my ps3 fat 40 gig on for maybe ten minutes, cool as a cucumber then all of a sudden the screen froze and it shut off with a few successive beeps and a blinking red light. When I try to turn it on the light goes red then yellow and I get the beeps again and back to the flashing red. I guess I'm now on the hunt for a new unit, my on,y question is how do I get the disc out? Is there a manual way like on the DVD drive for a pc?

Wrong section for this thread.

Hope this helps.

I fixed my YLOD PS3 a few weeks ago using the following repair kit off ebay:

Here's his You Tube.

It was quite easy to do & worked like a charm!

👍

PS: My PS3 was a different model than the one in the PDF, however the fix still worked after I figured out how to take it apart myself.

A torx screwdriver and thermal paste? I can buy the paste anywhere and I already have the tool. I'll just send it to Sony and let them do it. For some reason they quoted me $99 when everywhere I have read has said $150

The most important thing is the flux, it's especially forulmated for reflowing solder, there are also a few tips & tricks in the PDF for helping to prevent the YLOD from happeneing again & after appling one of them my PS3's fan is much quiter. But if your PS3 is still in warrenty there's no point trying to fix it yourself.

Just remember

1) get the Game CD out of the Machine BEFORE you send it , it won't be Returned if you don't

2) You did do a Backup of your Data ? because the Replacement PS3 will have no DATA on it Whatsoever .

3) Your PSN ID and Password , when you get your Replacement you Sign up with your old ID get the PS3 Activated via the XMB Menu and you can then use your Backed up GT5 Data and your good to go .

I have my save backed up to a thumb drive so I'm not worried about that. I am pretty bummed that I lost my mgs4 save. I had everything imaginable unlocked.

Just fix it yourself if it is out of warranty. I fixed mine after the brlod during endurance race at laguna seca. Followed this tutorial on youtube and it worked like a charm! Only took about 35 dollars and about 30 minutes. You will need a heat gun that heats up to around 700 degrees, (20.00 at home depot), a tube of arctic silver thermal paste (around 10 dollars from radio shack) and it was really helpful to me to have a set of small screwdrivers (about 5.00 for a set from radio shack). The hardest part is keeping track of the screws as you take them out! So easy to fix if you follow the tutorial to a tee. Otherwise send to sony, pay them 100 or so (closer to 200 after shipping when I checked), wait 6 weeks, lose all of your hard drive data and your game disc. Hmmm, a difficult choice?

Bottom line, these ****** things shouldn't die so quick considering that their respected companies gave these consoles a 10 year life cycle. With the YLOD, RROD and other strings of problems that you find online these days, and also the fact that these "NEXT-GRAPHICS" (their words not mine) consoles are already obsolete several years ago, the future of console gaming looks grim. Lesson learned, do the reflow, sell on EBAY and build a PC.

If you back up your data just by copying your save game, will it still work on your new PS3? Or do you need to do a full back up in order to work??
