I've come to the conclution that I need a memory card backup thing. Unfortunately I know nothing about what I'm talking about, which made it difficult to search for, but I did search (:

There's a Shark Port (?) and an X-Port (?) and some "MK's" file editor program? What does this mean? Bare minimum I want to be able to make backups of my memory cards so I can have more space. Best option would be to plug a computer into the memory card slot on the PS2 via USB on the computer, which I assume is how it works. If so, does the PS2 see a "huge memory card" or does it break it down into 8mb sections?

I don't really need to do hybrid stuff - not all that interested in that aspect. But I would like to share replays with people on the internet. I will of course wait to see what GT4 has built in - no telling, there may be a way to do that built into the game. But I still want to be able to clear my memory cards of most of the junk that is on them.

I'm lost! Help!

Sharkport and Xport are the same thing and have now been discontinued.

The replacement is the max drive. It works the same way as a usb memory stick. Stick it in the PS2, transfer files using the software supplied, stick it in PC, transfer the files. It's a lot easier to use than the Shark/Xport

MKs enables you to build hybrids. It can't transfer files.

If you have a mod chip or any method of running homebrew ps2 code and a network card, I can help you out.

If you don't, then the Action Replay Max Evo should do the job (it uses usb memory keys)

Well that's just crazy. Someone needs to make a USB cable that plugs into the memory card slot of the PS2 and software to run on a PC. Then have the computer / cable appear as a memory card to the PS2. You could have a 40GB mem card! (:

That would only work if your computer was within three or four feet of the PS2. In my case, I'm about sixty or seventy feet out of range and upstairs. The MaxDrive works perfectly for me, as it's the only method of the three that I can do.

Daan, will the software that comes with it be able to play the replays that people post in the WRS?

The software doesn't play the replays. Only the PS2 can do that.

Most WRS racers have an Xport. There is a program that can transfer the Xport file into a Max file. You can then download an Xport file, transfer it to a max file, copy it across to the Max drive and then copy it form there onto your PS2.

you are also limited in that you can only use replays from people in your NTSC region. PAL replays won't work.

I am in PAL region (Belgium)

I can only get hold on a "Action Replay Max Evo" here...

Would that be OK then? Main use would be to see WRS files and transfer my own to PC

Thanks!

Well, forgiven ;)

Interesting question remains, what made you think I was? name, usage of words, location?

Because than I would have to change something!

Thanks for the info, and I hope Loudmusic is also helped by our discussion :)
Although he is from "everywhere", do not know what format they use there......

And there's really no other option? I get this USB keychain thing and that's it? I'm guessing I boot the PS2 from the supplied software - there is no option to save games straight to the USB device?

I have a dinky old laptop that sits next to the PS2 for web surfing - it would be so great to just plug the two together and use the computer's hard drive as a memory card. Bah, no one is cool enough to do that.

That's it. You use the software supplied on a dinky, teenie, shrunken CD, and that takes you to a screen where you can transfer/crush saves from the card to the stick.

Even if the USB stick is plugged in, the game can only see the memory cards. The game itself would require to have the drivers in order to use the USB stick straight away.

AARRRRGGGG. I wonder how hard it would be for a company to make a USB cable with a memory card at one end and software to swap the contents of the memory card on the fly. These people just aren't using their brains.

...excellent idea...but...we would have to find a way to extract the driver preloaded on the ps2 and get ahold of a magicgate mem card slot...so..i doubt thats gonna happen anytime soon...

damn i should've bought the max drive instead of this cheapass chinese EMS memory adapter. Now i have to fork over another 40 bucks.
