Hey guys.

I just bought Gran Turismo 4 but I don't have a Sony PlayStation 2 memory card to go along with it. Playing only on arcade mode and being unable to save, it's been very disappointing and am planning to revert back to playing Gran Turismo 2. Should I actually fork out an extra $30.00 or so and get myself a memory card? Is simulation mode interesting? Or should I just not bother about it?

The original memory cards don't seem to work on the new game and I am unable to access the simulation mode.

Anyway, thanks everyone. I'm looking forward to seeing your replies.

Yes, you definitely should get a PS2 memcard to get the full GT4 experience. The simulation mode is not only worth it, it's the major part of GT4. I'm just a little surprised by the price of that memcard. Are you sure it is that much?

PS1-style memory cards only work with PS1 games. PS2-style memory cards only work with PS2 games.

This is due to how the cards are sectioned. PS1 cards - at least the standard type - have 16 gamesave "blocks" on them, regardless of the save file size, so you can only have a maximum of 16 different saved files. PS2 cards act like normal, writeable memory, with files being saved as files and the only limiting factor being the amount of memory available.

If you have a PS2, get a PS2 memory card - for all of your PS2 games.

Thanks for the replies everyone. It seems as though I will definitely need a memory card. As for its price, we live in New Zealand and therefore, the currency value may be a bit different for those of you in America.

By the way, Gran Turismo 4 is the only PlayStation 2 game that I own. I was a bit worried about spending money on a memory card that i'm only going to use for just one game.

Shopping list:
PS2 Memory Card x2
Datel MaxDrive
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City

And that lot should keep you occupied until *calculates* March next year.

Don't worry about buying the card for only one game, I bought the entire PS2 system for one game - GT3! You'll come across many good games as time goes by. :)

Actually, the MaxDrive is so you can back gamesaves up. Two memory cards is so you can car collect and do the save/reload trick.

Do like me.
Buy GT1, GT2, GT3, GTP, GTC, TT...

I also have my ps2 only for PD devotion.

IMHO, would not buy GTA, because it demands a little more of PS2 laser system.

Thanks everyone for the replies. Just wanted to let you all know that I got my memory card today and am very pleased with the game.

Good stuff. Do yourself a favour and check out some of the other great games on PS2. Shadow of the Colossus and God of War being 2 examples :)

Nice to see another Kiwi 'round these parts 👍

GTA: Vice City and GTA: San Andreas (mainly San Andreas) is what finally killed my laser about a month ago, after many years of loyal service (I collected my PS2 about 3 days after they came out!)

EDIT - My first game was GT3 by the way
