I nailed down both of the Merc challenges last night.
This is the write-up on the What-how-when details.

First:
Thanks for all the input from these guys Merc Race Suggestions?

And the story goes:

Off to the Car sales to buy my first car…SLK Kompressor.
I bought Full racing suspension, Sport Brakes, Racing Muffler, port polish, Chip, Full racing Tranny, Medium Slicks, Lightweight 1&2.

Mercedes Challenge – Beginner Level
Test Course

Bottomed out the suspension, Auto Setting tranny = 26, ASM = 5; TCS = 1. Hindsight should have gone to 28 as I had to blip the throttle to keep it at 161-163mph.

CLK 55: + 2.125
CLK 55: + 2.162
CLK 600: + 4.110
SLK 230: + 6.798
SLK 230: + 8.368

Best Lap: 2’23.658

Trial Mtn. II
Changed Tranny to 24
CLK 55: + 4.061
CLK 55: + 6.937
SLK 230: + 11.483
SLK 230: + 12.058
SLK 230: + 12.281

Best Lap: 1’39.588

At this point I realized I hadn't done the oil change, so that added to the HP.

Rome Circuit II
CLK 55: + 5.694
CLK 600: + 8.462
SLK 230: + 11.746
SLK 230: + 12.508
SLK 230: + 12.784

Best Lap: 1’35.000

I pocket 30,000cr for the races, a Kompressor for finishing the challenge and a Lancer Evo V GSR for finishing Beginner level. I also got to see the wonderful credits roll by. This marks Day 148. Rally and Beginner are finished, as is all of arcade. Currently holding at 58.7%

Mercedes Challenge – Amateur Level
Trial Mtn.

SLK 230: + 2.043
CLK 55: + 2.343
CLK 55: + 2.680
SLK 230: + 3.831
CLK 600: + 4.811

Best Lap: 1’34.702

Super Speedway
CLK 55: + 7.424
CLK 55: + 7.595
SLK 230: + 8.991
SLK 230: + 9.383
CLK 600: + 19.686

Best Lap: 40.047

Rome Circuit II
CLK 55: + 7.739
CLK 55: + 11.696
SLK 230: + 12.152
CLK 600: + 18.426
CLK 600: + 18.887

Best Lap: 1’33.986

I end this out with 60,000cr and the CLK touring car.

In hindsight, I should have skipped a power upgrade and picked up the brake balancer. I wasn’t able to kick the backend out coming into corners, and was at a lower exit speed.

I just ran the Beginner Merc race last night. Only the Type-R meeting left.
I also bought an SLK230. The car seemed to handle OK but was woefully underpowered. I put super slicks on it, S1 & S2 lightweight, chip, P&P, semi-racing breathing package. I kept losing the Test Course race by 0':0.1" to 0':0.5" Not quite enough legs yet, so I added the racing transmission. That let me win by 0':2.5" or so after a last-lap slingshot pass in Turn 3. I skipped Trial Mountain at first.

I had never run Rome backwards before, so it took some getting used to. In keeping with my usual methods, I lapped until I qualified 3rd, then ran the race. The only competion was the CLK55s (3). They were too heavy for the really tight stuff, but they had me on horsepower badly. After about 4 tries at this race, I was able to pass for the win in the 90 degree left on the cobbles leading to the Coliseum.

Last I ran Trial Mountain II. I expected to have trouble here, but to my surprise I qualified 1st right away even though I had never run this course backwards either. I led this race flag to flag for a margin of about 0':3.5". I don't know why but all the big MBs had trouble here.

I think I'm definitely going to need to add the suspension/brake items to make it in the Amateur level.

Der Alta:

Although I'm a new member, I've noticed that you are extremely detailed in your Write-Up's, and I'm very impressed to say the least. I'm glad someone here is willing and has the passion to do these, because they can end up taking a long time, and I'm sure your time is valuable, much like everyone elses. I just thought I'd express my thanks for being so helpful to this whole GTPlanet.net community.

I extend a thank you to you Der Alta.

Presarc:

You're very welcome. All of the info here, ands in the other write-ups is compiled in a compendium of sorts, that I'm in the process of publishing. It will be a "net book" of some sorts, available here on GTplanet.

Thanks go to Jordan for the space and access.

Keep looking around, as there is a considerable amount of info available.

I used the SLK that I bought for the Beginner version. I did stage 1 and 2 weight reduction, and added power (stage 2 I believe) and the racing transmission, because the stock gearing on the SLK sucks. Unfortunately I don't have better notes because I ran this race series a while ago.

I went this route to save money, which was a mistake. I spent too much making the little SLK competitive. Besides, I won one anyway after the first series. What I should have done, in hindsight is buy a CLK 55, spend less on upgrades, and ended up with the SLK prize car and a nice CLK.
