Built on the redesigned W140 chassis, this class came to be known by the name of CL only in 1998, after it had already undergone several name changes.The coupes, which were powered by the traditional V8 and V12 petrol units were first dubbed as the 500 SEC and 600 SEC respectively. However the name wouldn't stuck as only one year after the new generation's inception in 1993, the cars became the S500 and S600. Characterized by large, irregular triangular headlamps and a slightly curvy front grille crossed by horizontal beams as well as a flowing body missing the B-pillar, the CL was a sporty and luxurious coupe with a spacious interior complete with leather upholstery and wooden finishes.
