Rumors are floating around of a SLS clean diesel we'll see a Mercedes SLS AMG with a six-cylinder, triple-turbocharged diesel engine at the Paris Motor Show.
It has a rumored 400(ish) Horse Power and probably a billion pound feet of torque.

Like the idea of it? I don't really but it would be cool..
 
I'm not really sure of a supercar with a diesel engine. Where's the drama? It would sound horrid.

I can understand it, but 400bhp wouldn't make it supercar in this day and age. They need to have more power like the R8 Tdi concept had that coudln't be built as they didn't have a light/small enough gearbox able to take the torque.
 
That's one of the best things with the AMG Mercs, the fabulous sound of those V8s.

Let's save the powerful diesels for the M, ML and G-class Mercs.

Big, heavy GT barge with a diesel. Makes sense to me.

I've posted this video countless times, but these MAN 6 cylinder diesels would like to have a word with you :scared:


That being said, I wouldn't like a diesel sports car if it were as quiet as the Le Mans prototypes. The sound also seems more fitting for trucks (though opinions would probably change if we start to see more diesel sports cars).

Anyways, it's good to see a manufacturer try something relatively uncommon 👍
 
So it would be a BlueTEC version of the SLS? That's a bad idea.
 
Because what the SLS needs is an easier way to light up the rear tires. :lol:

I kid, of course. I'd like to see more diesel sports cars.

They said the samething about hybrids never sounding good & then a $845,000 Porsche came along.

Plus, I don't see how it could be any worse when we're in an age where petrol sports cars are emitting electronic sounds.

This has got to be a joke. Mercedes isn't going to make a Diesel SLS. The end.

As long as they still offer the petrol version, who cares?

Yes I know, its a race car, the tolerances are non-existent virtually, it doesn't need to be reliable, on and on it goes, but hey, we know its possible to have a high performance, high revving diesel engine, and with 3 turbos, hopefully the SLS will be the first among many diesel powered high performance cars in the future.

Interesting fact:
Mercedes only developed this triple turbocharged six cylinder because in Germany politicians aren`t allowed to drive eight cylinders.
