It is claimed that the German carmaker is set to up its existing stake in the Woking based squad from forty to up to seventy or eighty per cent, with Mercedes' Norbert Haug to possibly take over from Ron Dennis at the helm.

Auto Bild Motorsport wrote that the Stuttgart-based manufacturer is dissatisfied with the silver collaboration's lack of championship success since 1999, despite consistently delivering perhaps the biggest budget in pit lane.

The report also said that Mercedes, whose rumoured buyout would cost an estimated $380 million, is encouraged by BMW's progress since its rival German carmaker took over Sauber.

A spokesman was quoted as saying that it is 'no secret' that parent company DaimlerChrysler could up its stake in McLaren.

"Whether this will happen," the Mercedes-Benz spokesman added, "has not been decided."

Major German newspaper Bild, however, quoted a source at the carmaker as saying: "Soon we will take over McLaren completely."

No more McLaren F1 models then (since it uses a BMW engine) :(

It'll be good if Mercedes give them funding for road cars but stay (mainly) out of the way (like the Ferrari - Fiat relationship). But, if Mercedes just make them AMG 1.5 what would be the point?

And the reason McLaren-Mercedes haven't been winning championships is because of those engines that Mercedes supply (who actually makes the engines though? I know it isn't Mercedes themselves).

Wrong. In 2005 Daimler-Chrysler became the sole owner of Ilmor and renamed the company Mercedes-Benz High Performance Engines.

if it is true maybe maclaren will come out of it slump and get back to winning races. guess depends on who is driving them next year

Hmm interesting. Looks like F1 is becoming more and more a boxing ring for the major manufacturers.

Perhaps Mclaren could take over AMG's planned 'Black Series' (Less luxurious, more track orientated than the mainstream variants) and leave AMG on the luxury rockets.
 
I'm sure we've had a thread on this before...

I really don't like the idea of the future of one of F1's most famous and successful teams being in the hands of a board of directors who may or may not be fans of motorsport. Nothing good can come from it.
 
And there is no way they should get rid of Ron Dennis. He IS McLaren!

The pitlane would not be the same without him.

Also rumours that McMerc have also offered Kimi $64 million US to stay there. Someone high up has realised the potential in F1 I guess.

I'm not so sure. I get the feeling that once the novelty of having your own F1 team wears off, Merc might get a bit bored and decide it isn't worth it. Especially if they don't start winning. And then bam! 40 years of history goes down the pan. Either that, or if Mercedes have a few lean years, the same thing happens.

On a side note, it also means another great British team - based here, with all the hard work done here - ends up with a foreign anthem.

Fingers crossed for a Williams resurgency. That'll show 'em! Although I fear Williams may now be heading down the Tyrrell route, sliding into the back of the grid and going out without even a whimper.

honestly, I think Ron Dennis is a tool. look at how he's treating JPM after it was announced that JPM signed with Chip Ganassi after he was at fault for not resigning him for 2007 and beyond. he fired JPM from McLaren, and won't let him race anywhere else. and I heard a couple weeks ago about him saying a couple of low comments about JPM. it was something along the lines of "If I want to find Juan Montoya, I'll just call a McDonalds in the US." mind you that wasn't exact quote, but it was the gist of what he said. I think he's a being a little bitch about losing JPM when it was his own fault in the first place. this is F1, not kindergarten. again, Ron Dennis is a tool. Frank Williams definately handled losing JPM, and Webber with a LOT more grace than Dennis did when it was broken to the press about JPM. Williams just simply said that it is a shame that Webber didn't want to stay, and he wishes him luck in the future. I definately want to see Williams rise back to power next year with a 1, 2 with Rosberg and Wurz. no number 2 driver. just equal seats because I'm not sure who I'd put in which seat, besides, it'd let the drivers sort out who was number 1 and 2. out of all the teams on the grid, I'd definately like to see Williams do better. also, I definately don't want to see the McLaren name be gone from the F1 roster. that would be a right shame. that's my rant.

One could likewise argue that JPM is a whining crybaby... but since I've been following him since his Chip Ganassi days, I won't. :lol:

It'll be a sad day when McLaren ends up as just another cubicle in DCX's corporate office. Future road-cars? More overweight and overencumbered SLRs? AMG could make the same thing. Don't get me wrong, the McMerc was a nice car, but a little less Mercedes and a little more McLaren would have turned it from a "pretty good" supercar to "probably the best".

It's dark days indeed for McLaren, but it's been that way since Ferrari went on their seven year winning spree... :(
 
I went for work experience at the McLaren Technology Centre about a month ago and it was fantastic. I have been a fan of the team for years and would be sad to see it go.
Didn't Mercedes-Benz cite the lack of championship successes since 1999 to be the reason for the proposed take-over? (How do the other, none Ferrari/Renault teams feel) Wouldn't it be better to start with a competitive package than to start from scratch, after all, BMW won more races with Williams than they have as a manufacturer. Its unlikely they could build up their own team and reach full competiveness in time for the next season.

Can you elaborate a bit more?

McLaren, imho, should just remain to racing unless they think they can come out and put down the supercars today in a Return of the King sort of fashion. But the SLR will probably remain the only road car McLaren builds for a while.

Ron would be nothing without Bruce's interest in racing. Bruce had the company in a huge variety if motorsports. His remaining M6GT is the key point that shows the F1 road car is tied to his memory.

Ron Dennis is just well known for creating the McLaren Group that joins everything and managing the Formula 1 team.
