Mercedes in McLaren buyout link
Aiming to increase its 40 percent stake

Mercedes to take control of McLaren?

"If you listen to the muses of the F1 grapevine, then Mercedes-Benz could be preparing to buy the remaining slice of McLaren.

Team boss Ron Dennis and Mansour Ojjeh hold the 60 percent in question, with the German manufacturer already owning the rest.

Martin Whitmarsh would not comment specifically on the buyout rumours, but he did admit this week that Mercedes' 'interest' in the Woking based team 'is higher than ever before, on all fronts'.

He told the Reuters agency: "I think there is absolutely and clearly a commitment (from Mercedes) to being in F1 for a long time."

At the Circuit de Catalunya venue this week, moreover, it was rumoured that McLaren and Stuttgart based Mercedes could collaborate on more sports car projects in the future."

Hope mercedes buys them so they start becoming more serious.

I hope they merge aswell. Building everything under one roof is so much more efficient.

Sounds like a good idea, imo.

McLaren already builds the SLR in its factory, and having Mercedes own them completely might allow Mercedes to get more involved in it.

And possibly change the name to Mercedes F1 getting rid of the name McLaren from F1.

That’s what I’m worried about. 👎

I see this as another step in the war between BMW and Merc , BMW owns a team so now merc has to go and buy one :D:D

I see it as a bad thing myself. Manufacturers are all under the thumb of 'the board' F1 is massively expensive, and as soon as that company has financial woes the motorsport programme is usually one of the first things to get axed. I can see Renault pulling the plug on F1 within the next couple years to cut costs (their CEO is no fan of motorsport). I don't think Chrysler Benz are too healthy at the moment - we could quite easly see Merc dropping their F1 programme if the company as a whole doesn't pickup financially or if they don't get the results on the circuit they want. That would see the end of McLaren completely 👎

NOOOOOOOO!!

Not another privateer (sp) to go down the bin...

Would never happen.

Serious? You think that winning two world championships and only jus missing one with mercedes ISN'T serious?

Mercedes never did throw their full might behind the f1 project.

Wouldnt happen either. If chrysler seriously starts losing huge amounts of money I can see mercedes cutting ties. Mercedes is kinda subsidising the company at the moment.

There would never be the end of mclaren. Mclaren would just be the sports car division version of maybach.

Would never happen.
Like BMW and Sauber for instance?
If a manufacturer buys an F1 team it is purely for advertising and bragging rights. They are going to want everyone to know that it is their team, not a behins the scenes part of the team.

If Chrysler falls then so does Merc - they are one and the same now.

Mclaren is an F1 manufacturer - as soon as Merc buys McLaren, McLaren no longer really exists they just become another branch of Chrysler Benz, subject to the same political and financial whims as all the other branches - Chrysler, Mercedes, AMG, Maybach and Smart. Poor Smart sales have already threatened to drag them down - do you want the future of McLaren in the hands of a cheap watch/car maker?

Sauber is nothing compared to McLaren though. Sauber doesnt sell cars. McLaren would be to mercedes as lamborghini is to audi.

Yeah but look at the VAG group. They work together with all those different brands just fine. They have never been better.

As for daimlerchrysler taking mercedes down it will never happen. Trust me. Along with ferrari mercedes is the most widely known car marquee in the world. And me knowing what German people are like they would never allow such a thing. Mercedes is their pride and joy and they will do whatever it takes to keep that alive. To germans mercedes is king.

And technically AMG belongs to mercedes and they could cut off their ties if they really wanted to but it would hit mercedes hard. Smart could very well be killed off soon.

As for cheap car making mercedes might have cheapened a little bit in the past decade but their cars are still very good and they have now again decided to not skimp on their cars.

McLaren doesn't sell cars either, except the Macca F1 - and that was a long time ago now. The SLR wasn't a McLaren - it was engineered by McLaren but sold as a Merc. Mercedes cut its ties with McLaren's road car division last year and Gordon Murray, the engineering genius behind the F1 and major force behind the the SLR has also cut ties with both companies. McLaren's future as a road car manufacture is fairly bleak.

You are missing the point. McLaren could go on indefinately as an F1 team in their present state, engine suppliers come and go no matter how large they are. But as soon as a major manufacturer owns that F1 team, that team then becomes just another commodity within a large company. That commodity is subject to the whims of the boardroom, If the 'Mercedes F1 Team' is costing the company $600 million a year to run, but isn't performing on the track then that commodity becomes a waste of money, especially if board members aren't motorsport fans. So what happens? - they cut their losses and either try to sell the team as a going concern (who wants to buy an F1 team in free-fall?) or sells the F1 team's assets to the highest bidder. Either way McLaren exists no longer in any shape or form. 👎

Mercedes and McLaren are thinking about giving it another shot as making cars together.

Now I see what you mean. Agree 100%.
