The SHO V6 program was 20+ years ahead of its time!
The AIV (Aluminum-Intensive Vehicle) Sable was Ford’s 1990s experimental sedan:
20 aluminum-bodied Mercury Sables built for public test use; fitted with the Yamaha-derived V6 from the Taurus SHO.
By replacing the typical steel structure with spot-welded and adhesively bonded aluminum panels and incorporating aluminum suspension components; the AIV Sable shed about 400 lb compared to a steel SHO counterpart. Though it was never mass produced, the program helped push forward Ford’s use of lightweight materials in later vehicles.
