Bit of info - I'm house sitting for my parents who are currently in Mexico.

So I wake up, get in the shower, get out, and the phone is ringing. No ID on it. Pick it up, its my dad. He says he doesn't have too much time cause of the calling card and it being expensive. Tells me I need to do somethings, and its important, cause some stuff was stolen from them.

I have to cancel 2 credit cards and freeze one back account... and the bank account is for a foreign exchange student and all I have is his name and where his bank is...

Talk about a bad way to start yer first day of school for the semester... :indiff:

What I want to know before I go making calls to cancel these cards for people that aren't even in the country is how hard could this be? And yup, already late for classes from flicking through the phone book getting numbers I'll probably have to call...

I had to cancel my sisters cards when they where stolen in Thailand. Took 10 minuites. I just had to confirm i was a relative by giving date of birth, full name, full address etc. Very easy.

Although that could vary from bank to bank, and country to country.

I've taken care of two cards.

Bank of America is a pain in the ass... they don't like the fact that I only have the foreign exchange student's name... so I have to somehow contact him and get him to contact his bank... :indiff: Stupid BoA :p

I've received the worst service from B.O.A. I prefer never to deal with them. 👎

I don't think Bank of America is the only bank like this. Most banks won't let you cancel, freeze, or change the status of anybody else's accounts of funds.

So instead of doing what you were told, you've decided to talk about it on the internet.

BRILLIANT!

Actually, I tried some more... but the local B.O.A. was closed by the time I got done playing phone tag (they bounced me three times... 4 different reps) And all I got was "We need you to get Alex (the exchange student) to contact us." And I try to explain its not exactly easy to get ahold of him, or for him to call back here. They don't give a damn.

Bastards -_-

This makes me want to think twice about the trip to mexico i may be taking in a few weeks.

Hrmm.

Leave your credit cards at home. Bring traveller's cheques instead, and maybe one credit card you know will be easy to cancel if you do lose it. Don't let Visa or Mastercard ruin your trip for crying out loud!

Just make sure you know your account info, if ya do, should be easy to cancel. Its just the crap information I have to try to cancel something.

Anderton's advice is a good idea. Checks and one card that you know you could cancel.

Just be careful. Don't get arrested by the cops for being American like somebody at school did over Easter Break last week.

This is worse than when we went to Canada. At least the darn Canadians, they stole our credit card numbers. At least they waited for a month and a half after we returned home to use the 4 credit card numbers they had stolen. We used credit cards there because it would easily convert the money, but we won't be doing that again. At least they didn't actually steal the credit card, just the number. We can't figure out how they got the number because we didn't leave them sitting around.
