Watched this today, here's my review. Feel free to coment.

Micheal Mann is excellent. He's the guy behind the films Heat & Collateral. Both very good, Collateral has the best quickdraw sequence in a film ever & Heat has THE best gunfight ever, EVER! He is an excellent film maker & yet this has the same problem as Collateral, which is, i don't know what it is. It's missing "something".

Everything about Miami Vice is excellent. The Actors, Colin Farrel & Jamie Foxx are both class & ooze cool. Then we have the beauty of the film. Forget Hero or Crouching Tiger, this is a proper "beautiful" film. Its all shot in a grainy fashion & looks excellent, it's the same style as Collateral was done in. Lots of close-up shots of the actors, plus lots of paining shots showing you the scenery/water/cars or whatever is going on at the time. The plot is, well, standard for these sort of films & the script isn't as clever/crisp as Collateral, but its not bad by any means. The final (& almost only proper) action sequence is superb & probably the most realistic gun fight i've ever seen next to Heat. Although some of the guns have an odd noise, which is weird for Micheal Mann as he's usually spot on. Oh ye and Naomi Harris' bum, WO! was that a stunt bum? cause it was proper lush!

There's a couple of suprise bits, no real twists. Just some good "oh" moments. I actually went "Jesus" at one point, but that was at the size of one of the sniper rifle bullets. Oh and they sounded 'effin wicked!
Ok, the bad things?? Well if i'm being picky, its to long (but it never drags). The Ferrari is completely wasted, not like in Bad Boys 2 were its in a full on car chase, its mearly there to be driven in for a few minutes and thats it. And apparently Colin Farrel isnt right for Tubbs, having not seen the TV series i cannot comment on this or not. But i liked him. Oh and there is very little humour, its a very serious film. Although there are 4 or 5 funny lines.

Also, i (and neither did my 50+ mum) didnt have a problem understanding them. A few places have said they couldn't understand half of what was being said. I don't know whats wrong with them, but there's nothing wrong with the speaking, they don't mumble.

Imagine a 2 hour+ version of Fastlane, with a different sense of style & less humour. Some people probably will get bored. I didn't, i loved it. But for some reason i cant bring myself to give it more than
7/10

No! How dare you mention Fastlane anywhere near Miami Vice!

I saw the movie the day it came out and I liked it a lot. I'm a pretty big fan of the show, and although it had been said that fans may be dissapointed, I surely wasn't. The acting for the most part was pretty good, but we really didn't see the depth of Crockett and Tubbs like we did on the show, and granted the movie was only a bit over two hours, they could have done a bit more.

But I had two pretty big problems with the movie as a whole:
1) Where was the synth music in the background? HELLO!!!!???? (j/k)
2) Where was the car chase? There was a small one in the begining, but nothing like what was on the show, and that was dissapointment.

I enjoyed the realism and the modernized story lines of the movie, and it made things seem somewhat beliveable the whole way through. Although it was funny that Michael Mann didn't take realism to the next step by having cars not act as bulletproof shields... As they clearly aren't.

BTW: The sniper riffle you are talking about is the .50 Cal. They are illegal to own in most states, and often have to be used under the supervision of trained professionals. I belive they are used primarily in the Millitary and with SWAT teams across the country, mostly to cause large ammounts of damage as smoothly as possible... Like when the FBI guy lost an apendage in the car...

Overall I gave the movie an 8.75/10, as the show is still better, but they did a good job of bringing it back to life for the silver screen.

555, I thought Jamie Foxx played Tubbs. That's just the one thing I can't get out of my head when I see the ads.

Colin and Jamie just don't do a good enough Crockett and Tubbs for me. They just don't look the parts. I at least hope they follow the original characters' attitudes.

Yeah your right, I haven't seen the fiolm yet but Tubb's is the black guy in the series (I forget his real name) and Don Johnson is Crockett.

I watched it on the weekend, and it was very slick indeed. It's a well-known fact that I despise Colin Farrel, but he was actualy pretty good in this movie. Gong Li or Li Gong or whatever her name is is gong ugly, and that detracted from the sex scenes. And the movie lagged quite a bit in the middle, but made up for it at the end. As well, someone in another forum on another site far far away brought up an interesting point. Mann's movies ted to get better as they age. I remember the first time I saw Heat I was underwhelmed, and now I recognize it for the masterpiece that it is.

That said, let's not turn this into a Michael Mann ass-kissing contest. Anyone remember Manhunter? One of his worst, it looks like a 2-hour episode of Miami Vice, the original show!

Tubbs is played by Philip Michael Thomas, who if most don't know, voiced Lance Vance in Vice City.

Gong Li certainly ain't ugly. She's not beauty queen & give me Ziyi Zhang over her any day. But when she let her hair down, she looked alright.

I haven't seen Manhunter, but i've read nothing but good things. And i haven't actually seen a bad film by him. Ali is probably his worst. Its not bad though.

Well, Manhunter is one of those movies like Boondck Saints. In other words, a lot of people like it, and I can't for the life of me figure out why.

I'd be interested to hear the difference between SD-DVD and HD-DVD, But I'd most likely become jealous afterwards.

This is one of the first releases for Blu-Ray discs when they hit Australian shores (eventually) if I'm not mistaken so it'll be interesting to compare the two. But then again, HD is already projected to wipe the floor with the Blu-ray format, but I'll give Sony and it's followers some hope for now.

I heard that Miami Vice was filmed with a Digital HD Camera.

Boring and uninteresting. I couldnt even sit through the whole thing without falling a sleep. Jamie Fox is overrated.
