Gentlemen, I’m no Stirling Moss, but I would like to take place in an event that captures something of the spirit of the racers of his era. Therefore, from now on while I’m on GT5 I will be surrounded by open tins of high octane petrol with matches and sheets of sandpaper precariously poised above them. Friends will be standing by with heavy iron bars to add to the realism when I stray off track.

Actually, that isn’t true, but I do want to run a race which comes as close to the Mille Miglia as we can on GT. I tried making a circuit 1000 miles long in the track creator section, but failed miserably. I am therefore left with the Nurb 24 hour circuit, 64 laps of which gives us 1,008.64 miles, with a total ascent equal to twice the height of Everest.

The Merc SLS AMG in stock trim and on Sports Hard tyres can comfortably do a lap in 9 minutes 35 seconds, an average of 98MPH. Stirling averaged 100MPH in his 300SL, but like I said, I’m no Stirling Moss.

So, the challenge is this; 64 laps of the Nurb 24 hour track in a stock Merc SLS AMG on Sports tyres, at one sitting around ten hours long. To keep everyone interested, after the fifth lap has been completed, whenever a competitor pits those who are in the last third of the places (ie 5th and 6th if 6 were taking place) would be allowed to use Sports Soft tyres, those in 3rd and 4th would be allowed to take on Sports Medium. Of course, if someone on Soft tyres climbed the leader board to 3rd or 4th then when they pitted they would have to go onto Medium, whilst those on Medium would be allowed to take on Soft should they find themselves at the back etc.

In this way I would hope that the field could be kept relatively close. In my experience Medium tyres are about ten seconds faster than Hard and Soft about ten seconds faster still.

Tyre wear and fuel use would be on normal which, in the case of the SLS is pretty quick fuel usage, it has to be said. Damage will be on hard, so there will be a compromise to be found between going flat out and keeping it on the black stuff, the penalty for a serious off half way round the lap would be severe. I am considering turning collisions off so that if you do have a bump it will be all your own fault, but I haven’t decided on this point yet.

Who am I kidding? It’s all academic! Where the hell am I going to find enough other guys committed enough to spend ten hours sweating their rocks off around the Nurb to make a race viable?

Provisional time and date; 0700GMT Sunday 24th February 2013. If you’re nuts enough put your name down.

Cheers, Z.
