I just played Minecraft on my iPhone and its actually a lot more fun that I thought it was. I want to get this on my laptop but I don't know what sort of requirements I need and if my 5 year old laptop is enough.

It only has 1GB of ram and runs Windows Vista. I can run Bloons Tower Defence up to about level 25 without it lagging or anything.

It doesn't have any special features. Just a basic laptop I got for free from my old school.

I was running Minecraft on a MacBook 2.6GHz with 2GB RAM and Intel 2000 or 3000 graphics, it ran like crap. With everything set to performance settings I got maybe one frame every few minutes (massive exaggeration but it was easily less than 10fps on average) and in fact on my Mac Pro with 6GB RAM, a 2.66GHz quad core Xeon and an ATI 4870 (with 512MB VRAM) it still wouldn't run smoothly on high settings! Maybe the Mac version runs poorly compared to the Windows version, but I don't know. These were old versions from at least a year ago, things may have improved or done the opposite since then.

Isn't there a demo or something?

I run it on my MacBook Pro, with Intel HD4000 graphics, and it's fine on far render distance and 'fancy' graphics settings.

I just tried out that demo and it, well, it doesn't even run. It loads and everything then my frame rate is about 1 every 15 seconds. That's a shame, looks like I'll have to wait until I get a fancy gaming PC.

Could you please post complete specs of your laptop? How much RAM is your laptop using while playing Minecraft? Does your laptop get very hot during gameplay (heat kills performance)?

Maybe the game just simply doesn't like integrated graphics.. But yes anyway, you'd be better off with a fancy, modern gaming desktop PC and keep the laptop for trips.

I don't play this but how can a game that looks like **** on purpose run so badly?

It's poorly coded and generates sections (16x16x256 I believe?) of terrain on the fly as you 'discover' them (i.e. run out of previously generated terrain), so I think the bottleneck is probably in the data bus speed. I can't imagine why a 4870 like I have in my Pro, which could run pretty much every game up to BF3 maxed (admittedly without much AA), would struggle with drawing loads of cubes with tiny textures and no AA.

Ha ha, anti-aliased Minecraft. Almost as pointless as kerning a monospace typeface.

Ill post my full specs later.

I don't think I can check anything during minecraft, as it froze my laptop when I tried to minimise it earlier.
