Has this car even existed in real life?* If I try to search pictures off Google, I can't find anything except for Photo Mode pictures (although I did find a few scale models). If I try to find general information about it, I only get GT-related info. It has no Wikipedia article either. This really is confusing me

I know it has, but feels really strange to not find any information about it

There are pics of the real car in the Google Image search for "Toyota 88C" in addition to GT5 screen shots and model car pictures.

It's so rare to find because it was banned in the 80's, after only ever being entered in 3 races. The 88C took over after that.

I've suddenly started getting interested in Japanese motorsport history because of GT, so this is all great information! Thanks a lot :D

edit - with a little bit of googling, I've found out that Minolta is a camera making company (which I didn't know about because I've never seen one in my life). Why they used the name Minolta Toyota 88C-V in GT is beyond me.

No, it wasn't. It just wasn't particularly fast compared to its 88C predecessor, both were dumped for the newer 89C-V.

GT commonly uses the name of the primary sponsor of the race car in their names, look at all the Super GT cars, and many others.

As for Minolta, yes they made cameras, then they merged with Konica (another Japanese camera manufacturer), and sold their camera operations to Sony about 8 years ago. Now they deal almost exclusively in laser printers.

Hmm weird, every piece of data ive found has said that it was banned in the 80's, and was only entered in 3 races? Meh, Holden owns Toyota ;) haha

I'll have to try and find it later tonight but there was an article I had read online about it. I believe even someone here had found it because they were pointing out that its such a dominant car in game, but IRL it wasn't.

Yeah it owned in gt4 around the ring. Havnt tried it in gt5 yet, had one for ages though lol.

Id did exist but more people search google for Toyota 88C for GT stuff so only Gran Turismo related results apear on the first few pages when searching :)

Ah, there it is! Thanks a lot 👍 Now if someone could find me a picture of the blue 88C-V, I would be extremely grateful!

BTW - Why is the 88C-V called the Minolta? Even with the minimal information I have about the 88C(V) I've never seen that name.
Minolta was the main sponsor. They had nothing to do with the creation, development, or manufacturing of the vehicle, they just paid the most money to get their logo and name on the car.

I'm pretty sure that I've seen it raced at PIR when I was young. It was an IMSA car right?

Nope it was Group C and only ran outside the US. If you saw one it was likely a Gurney Eagle which would have been all white and sponsored by Toyota only. They did have a modified 88C, and then one of their own chassis as well.
