This Mission Hall challenge- #14- is driving_ me_ nuts!!!

If anyone has cleared this mission, please help! How did you catch the Buick? If you watch his replays, that car, lowered, on slicks with a modern suspension, appears unbeatable.

I think this challenge is an update of one of my favorite Muscle Car battles in GT2.
Just much more frustrating.

Oh and BTW:
maskrider is the MAN and an international GT star. I hereby nominate him for the Gran Turismo hall of fame.

The key is early power application. In a high torque car like the superbird especially, you _must_ be able to lay on the power at or before the apex of the turn without spinning the tires or doing any sideways motoring. This might seem like an obvious statement, but most folks have trouble doing it. Most typically, they enter the turn too hot and/or too shallow and either have to feather the power a lot or wait until almost the turn exit before giving it gas.

Slow down more than you think you need to as you come into the turn. Turn in late. And unwind the wheel as you roll on the power.

Practice this until you can lay down the power hard at the apex without spinning the wheels or fishtailing.

Once you can do that, you'll find yourself gaining on that Buick pretty fast. Mostly because the AI doesn't know how to drive...

There's no chance in catching the Buick Special if the computer could drive worth a damn.

However, it can't. Soooo, catching it is fairly easy. Slow-in, and fast-out is the best statement for this mission. There was tips on this mission in either the Mission Hall is a ***** thread, or in another one with the same discussion. The one I found most helpful was the one referring to the two turns after the hillclimb. The right turn at the top of it, and the right turn that follows that shortly after. Get those two turns down nicely, and you're halfway there. The other half is practice & the tip from above.

You need to brake pretty early, and maintain a smooth line, too. I caught him just before the long " back" straightaway on the 3rd lap. Once you figure that out, it's pretty easy.

This isn't entirely on topic but...

What track does this take place on? I'm at work so I can't check. I had no idea there was a superbird challenge. I know what I'll be doing when I get home tonight...

I beat it yesterday without too much practice, probably took me about 40 minutes, but when I got it I beat him by about 3 seconds, overtook him at the end of the second lap. It is really really important to be slow in fast out, another thing that I found helped was to brake at full power when first braking, then about halfway into the braking zone pump the brakes, I saw it as a tip in another thread, maybe it reduces wheelspin, maybe it was just psychological but I found I was a lot quicker when I did it. Brake way before you think you need to. Use the markers on the track, going into the first corner I'd brake just before the 100m sign and then accelerate through it, the 2nd kink onto the hill part you can brake enough to take it down to about 60mph to be on the absolute limit. Going up the hill, watch for where the other cars brake and brake about 40m later than they do, the almost hairpin turn onto the back straight is deceptive.... you can actully take it with lowest speed at about 41mph I found, originally I was dropping to about 31/32... this can give you a lot of time on that straight. Also wherever possible on long straights try to slipstream the car in front of you, every tenth counts. The final corner, the chicane needs no braking if you get it right, just ease off the gas a bit to go through. Hope it helps.

I overtook that Buick at the end of the second lap too. This mission ain't too difficult. Indeed, slow in, fast out is the best. And with the corners before the 90 degree turn on top of the hill and 2 corners after that corner, I hit the brakes very shortly and then I drifted through those corners, won a lot of time with that. :)

The mission with the Stratos was pretty easy after I got the hang of that car, I finished 4 seconds ahead of the Alfa which started in first place. I can't get the hang of that Superbird though. I always tend to follow the AI car driving line, so it'll probably take a long time before I can beat this mission, if I ever do.

I did it first time =|. And I'm a rubbish driver. I just kept at it, I dont like the Superbirds handling and braking much, but I actually kinda enjoyed it. It was quite tight because I took the Buick on the right turn before the final chicane/S-bend.
I was quite a while ago when I did it, but all I remember was the fact that I managed to close a 6 second gap on the final lap.
Funnily enough, this is the only driving mission that I have done apart from the first ten. I'm having loads of trouble on the Paris mission with the 206....that Focus is sick!

Haha I beat that Focus with -0.016 after going at it for over an hour. I was literally yelling at the tv going ner ner, loooooser... *sticks tongue out @ the Focus*..... definitely hard, you practically have to drive 3 perfect laps... fortunately the 206 steers very easily.

man.. i was on a roll one day and then stopped after a while :( i won this, and like 5 others... but when i went back.. i couldnt win any lol

I had a hard time beating mission 13 too, with the 206 Rally Car. But eventually, I won. Now I've completed all missions, except 25-29. So, 5 more missions to go, and the Mission Hall is complete for me.:D Unfortunately, because I really do like those missions. It adds something extra to the game.:)

But till now, missions 11-15 and 34 are the toughest, the rest can be done (quite easily).:)

Too bad you get an unraceable car as a prize for those 3 laps battles, a tank car. I did a few, then skipped the rest and did the slipstream missions and got the Zonda LM race car, now thats a tight car!

Yeah pretty funny how I'm working / sweating my ass off trying to get those battles won for hours and hours to win a car which I'll try out for 5 minutes on the highspeed ring and then will rot away in my garage. Oh well, the tank car was one of those cars I was looking forward to drive. I haven't driven my zonda lm yet either and I already have it for a while, but that is because I haven't had a proper opportunity to enter a race with it.

I immediately sold my tank car. That thing is ugly and won't drive it anyway. Luckily I could sell it for 212,000 or so. :)

But for missions 30-34 you'll get the Nissan R89C Race Car. Haven't driven yet with that one though.:)

I just passed this mission, I passed the Buick already right at the turn on the uphill section of lap 3. :dopey: At first it seemed impossible, but after practicing and knowing when to brake it wasn't that hard.

You have to brake quite early before a turn, just slightly steer into it, and when you are about to enter the turn you have to let go of brake / gas and steer into it, with just going on rolling wheels (not de- or accellerating) your car turns way faster. Once your car is in the right direction again slam the gas and repeat. The key is to steer just a little before you enter the turn, so the steering / weight shift delay is timed to take the turn as sharp as possible.

At the chicane before the finish you can brake slightly, that's what I did anyway and still passed it easily. You wouldn't want to risk giving your victory away by slamming into the concrete.

i agree with smellysocks i used that exact strategy and passed the buick on the turn before the chicane on the second lap and won by 14 or so seconds. took forever to learn how that hunk of crap car worked . :grumpy:

I think this mission is too easy relative to the other missions. It's like they're overcompensating for the questionable handling you have to deal with. It's a real shock the first time you try it, but once you get the hang of it it seems really easy. I hit several walls the first time I passed the mission. It's a pretty funny replay -- I passed the Buick but was being too careful on the last section and he went through the last chicane much faster than I did, slamming right into me as I entered the final straight. I pretty much lost it and was all over the track just trying to block him. The Buick actually pushed me across the finish line sideways.

I think people who have trouble with this test are similar to people who have trouble with that S license test in the snow. You're trying too hard. You just have to ease up a little on the turns and you'll glide right through without much effort.
