It looks like Laser TVs might have to be added to our ever growing list of television types and, if Mitsubishi achieves its goal, Laser could do the same to plasma as SED is threatening to do to LCD and CRT.
Based on rear-projection DLP technology, it uses three coloured lasers - red, green and blue - to display the image on advanced plastic screens rather than glass like plasma. This means that they could be considerably lighter than their monstrous plasma rivals as well as sucking less power and offering a greater range of intense colours.
Though the technology has been in the pipeline for sometime now, it looks like Mitsubishi might be getting it to shelves earlier than expected and could be seen late in 2007 not long after SEDs anticipated debut. These laser TVs are going to rivalling plasmas rather than LCDs and a Mitsubishi spokesman has suggested they will compete in terms of size and price but will be easier to run and move around the house.
