General question for car buffs:

Are the GTO and the Monaro the same car?! If so what's the story behind that?

My knowledge isn't near as good as some so I don't know all the details and I hope I don't give you any blatant misinformarion, but I can correct you on one thing:

The Pontiac GTO (the new-ish version, not the one from the 60's :) ) is as I understand it essentially the same car as the Monaro, with probably some slightly different styling and similarly minor changes. This is largely due to the companies both being in the General Motors family.

The Mitsubishi GTO is I believe a completely different car, released in the US(and possibly other markets, I don't know) as the 3000GT(and as the Dodge Stealth with some minor changes).

EDIT: Looks like I'm too slow again.

The Pontiac GTO and Holden Monaro are all based on the same coupe platform.

The Pontiac G8 and Holden Commodore are based on the same sedan platform.

Since all 4 have the same powertrain options, all 4 may very well be based on the same primary chassis/platform, with some secondary differences between the coupe and sedan entries. I think a Pontiac G8 would look awesome with GT5 graphics but that's just more wishful thinking.

Basically this. The GTO/Monaro/Commodore in GT5 are all on the last version of GM V-Platform (roughly the same platform as the one in the Lotus Carlton, albeit somewhat modernized) that GM also build the Catera and countless other rebadges off of. The Monaro was just a slightly smaller coupe version, and GM decided to repurpose it for the American market as the Pontiac GTO to replace the loss of the Firebird. It's called a "captive import."

The Pontiac G8 (and current Holden Commodore) are built off of the newer GM Zeta platform, as is the current Camaro.

In comparison, the Mitsubishi GTO and the Dodge Stealth were built off of the Mitsubishi Diamante platform and were wholly unrelated.
