I think we missed something at the Detroit show in January.

What it Is
Mitsubishi Concept-RA Preview – Detroit Auto Show: Remember the Mitsubishi Eclipse? No, not the oversized, overstuffed two-door Galant boulevard cruiser that it’s turned into in recent years. We mean the original all-wheel drive turbocharged coupe that combined a low price with high performance in a way buyers hadn’t seen in decades. Apparently, Mitsubishi remembers it too, because the Concept-RA reminds us a lot of that old Eclipse: All-wheel drive, a turbo engine, and killer looks.

Why it Matters
Ask any enthusiast, and they will tell you that the Eclipse actually died in 2000, when the third-generation car grew considerably, lost its all-wheel drive and got a V-6 instead of a turbocharged four-cylinder. The Concept-RA portends a return to the original idea. Of course, it’s not called an Eclipse, and Mitsubishi makes no mention of it ever being an Eclipse. But if Mitsubishi is serious about remaking its image in the U.S., a new Eclipse with some of that old-school vibe would be huge.

What’s Under the Hood
Remember how we told you the Concept-RA had a turbo engine? Well, we may have neglected to mention that it was a diesel, one that's showcased under the RA's clear hood. But wait, this diesel has 201 horsepower and 310 lb.-ft. of torque. It’s connected to the same twin-clutch automated manual that we recently proposed to in the Lancer Evolution, and all that is connected to the same Super All-Wheel Control combination of active center differential, active yaw control, anti-lock brakes and active stability control. So the redline will be low, but hey, we’ll take stonkin’ torque over a screaming redline if we have to

What it Looks Like
The Concept-RA looks exactly like the next Eclipse should: a low-slung version of the Lancer Evolution, albeit with two scissor doors. There's a very Lancer-like nose, with the same big air intake flanked by similar headlights. The fenders bulge over gorgeous 21-inch wheels, and the doors are heavily scalloped thank to massive vents charged with clearing hot air from the engine compartment. From the rear you can see definite influences of previous Eclipses; the second-generation car is reflected in the way the sloping roofline meets the rear bodywork, and the rather robust tail pays homage to the current model.

What's Inside
One look at the Concept-RA's interior and you might think that Mitsubishi has luxury ambitions, but remember -- it's just a concept. Should a derivative of the Concept-RA eventually hit showrooms, buyers probably won't be able to get theirs with supple leather, generous amounts of genuine brushed aluminum, or a flat-bottom steering with plenty of shiny finishes. It's not all bad, though -- chances are the aluminum seat trim running along your spine would become bothersome after awhile.

What Mitsubishi Says
Mitsubishi’s angle on the Concept-RA is that it blends performance and environmentalism without compromising either. To wit: “Mitsubishi Concept-RA shows that thrilling performance and environmental responsibility need not be mutually exclusive concepts. This coupe concept features the S-AWC vehicle dynamics control system driveline and the Twin Clutch SST automated manual transmission used in Lancer Evolution, and is powered by a new high-output, high-efficiency clean diesel engine.”

What We Think
Tell you what, Mitsubishi. If you build this and put an Eclipse badge on it – and keep the turbo and all-wheel drive of course – we’ll forgive you for the third and fourth generation cars. M’kay? Hell, we’ll even forgive you for the Endeavour. How’s that for a bargain?

Yeah, I'm not thrilled about the bigger-mouth-than-the-GT-R Grille, or the far-too-low headlights, but it's an Eclipse. With 4WD. and an I-4. Diesel.

How'd the hell we miss it? I mean, I first heard of it in the new Motor Trend I got today...and I usually get better info from YOU GUYS!!!

I saw this in Chicago. I saw the ugly hood and looks that aren't that great and moved on. I'm sure they would de-uglify it a bit before production, but a form of the EVO's AWD and a turbo gasoline (I can't see a diesel in a Mitsubishi sports car) engine would make for a sweet Eclipse replacement.

Let's face it, it looks ugly right now, but we don't care if the drivetrain, (and hell, even the lower weight/tidier size) makes it into a toned-down production car.

If the Cayman were a foot higher, but, yeah, I can kinda see where you're coming from

I doubt you'll see it over there. Only one Eclipse has ever gone abroad, and that one was in Japan. Personally, I feel it's more off the current Gen IV model, which, in turn, was inspired by the Gen II. Besides, It's just a styling/technology concept.

for now.

The important part is the drivetrain and engine...It's what us Yanks have been waiting for since they put a V6 in the snout of the Gen III, and placed it and the Galant on the same platform.

For those of you in Europe, Think of the last Alfa GTV, but without the soul. That's Gen IV, for ya.

I think the tails will get bigger, (for area/visibility requirements, I think,) Probably ending up like the Gen IV's.

Although...I'd like to see them stretched allll the waaay acrosssss...Like the Gen II.

Note to Mitsubishi: BUILD THIS and scrap the current gen Eclipse like the ugly fat dog it is. That is all.

Its like a melted fish...

That being said!

I have a simple solution: Stick the powertrain of the Lancer Ralliart under the Eclipse, and we've got DSMII. Its really just that easy!

I saw this a while ago (can't remember when). The drawings and concept looked good, but then again I remember thinking the same thing for the Eclipse concept (gen before the current)... If this is going to be the next Eclipse then meh.

BTW, those headlights definitely ain't gonna pass standards or codes or whatever the regulation is...

They'd have to get it off the Galant platform, though. The thing weighs 3547 lbs, heavier than the Accord and Altima Coupes.

A Lancer Ralliart drivetrain wouldn't help things unless the car went on a SERIOUS diet.

Also surprised you didn't mention the diesel engine in this one. That one (with it's sheer torque) Might be able to pull along the current Eclipse at a fairly good rate.

The Eclipse I best remember was the 1995 model with the high spoiler and FWD (or "wrong-wheel drive" for some of you). I didn't know who was smoking crack in designing the 2000-style Eclipse. "Big-ass" car or not, I really liked the 2006 Eclipse. It's a far cry from the compact Eclipse we've been used to, but my only complaint about the 2006-style Eclipse is that it could have had 4WD or even RWD. If they really wanted to offer a halo car, they could have taken that 2006 Eclipse to make some sort of super-Mitsubishi- much wider, RWD (4WD doesn't really work unless you're Bugatti or Lamborghini), a bigger and more powerful engine, a mid-engine layout, and a very good high speed. I think of the 2006-style Eclipse as a FWD coupe with supercar-like looks.

This RA Concept, however, is much different. I still envision the 1995-style Eclipse as what was lost in translation when the 2000-style Eclipse was made. Or at least, the Eclipse that was in the first "Fast and the Furious" movie. I'd never think of the Eclipse being a lower-spec Lancer. Most people usually like low and thin headlights. I'd raise the headlights as well as the top of the front grill to still remain proportional to the rest of the car's design. The big intercooler up front surely screams monster (or badly-done tuner car). I think sporty design with cars like these, so I would imagine this next Eclipse as having a longer spoiler with the endplates of the spolier being proportionate to the top edges of each brake light.

On the performance front, this should be a dazzling machine bearing the three diamonds of Mitsubishi. I think an amazing Mitsubishi is in the works with this package. Maybe when this gets hot, then we can finally specualte on if Mitsubisht would bring back a car called the... I don't know... 3000GT?

I personally love the design of the RA concept. Futuristic, but simple enough not to be called outrageous.
