Hey guys.

My friend has a PS2 with a swap disk thing so he can play imports. He was just over and I put in my brand new F1 career challenge game and we played it for a bit. However today I put it back into my PS2 that is not modded and it says the infamous 'disk read error'.

Can a modded PS2 corrupt American non-copied games?
 
no, it can't. Besides, as you said, he's not using a modded ps2 - just the standard swap trick.

Try cleaning the laser (most stores sell disks that do it for you). Also check if the cd is clean.
 
Eh I needed a new one anyways so I picked one up today. I've had the old once since 2001 and it was just too old.

We tried getting it fixed at a local game shop and it kinda worked, however while it was being fixed someone stole the game that was in it because I forget to take it out.
 
if it's that old, it's probably that the laser just died off on you. The first 4 revisions of the ps2 had fairly poor lasers installed onto them.
