Does anyone else here enjoy building model cars?

I do, and i have onlybuilt one, i just got into this hobby- a :bmw:, of course :)

and, does anyone know where i can get some good prices on 1/24 scale models..(i like tamiya the best)?

I collect and mod Maisto 1/18 scale cars...even done a couple engine swaps and stuff...very fun and you can show off your work.

I go to Exoticar.com (but I buy my Maisto cars from Target, KB Toys, Spencer's gifts, Toys R Us, ect...you can get them for as cheap as $12, most cost around $17), you can find good stuff there. Maisto makes nice 1/24 scale cars too(they make everything, motorcycles, 1/12 scale, pull backs, hot wheel size, all that)and you can find those at the places I listed, most cost around $9, some as cheap at $6. Maisto 1/24 scale have opening doors, hoods, trunks, turning wheels with turning steering wheel, they are great. Diecast ofcourse. And they are pre-assembled(I have found several that you have to put together, along with 1/18 scale put together ones(1/18s have 2 sets of rims and other options, although they are harder to find and the ones I've found are either cars I already have or ones that I don't want at all))

You can't get good prices on models. They're just too much of a niche market. But as with anything esle, look online. Mailorder hobby shops usually have as good pricing as possible. That being said, if there is a REAL mom-n-pop style hobby shop in your town, try to support them. You know the kind of place - a little store somewhere with narrow aisles and dusty old kits piled to the ceiling and dollhouse furniture right next to battleship models. It's great to have a resource like that when you need stuff right away. They can usually do special orders, too. And yes, Tamiya makes great quality kits, as does Hasegawa. Stay away from Testors and Revell. They are WalMart junk.

I haven't built a model in years but I did used to build big Tamiya F1s as well as military models. My friend's father raced dirt track cars and we used to scratch build our own tube-frame Modifieds using plastic tube and pipe stock. We even made our own working coil-over shocks using ballpoint pen springs. We'd raid other kits for drivetrain parts, bodies, wheels etc. and use sheet stock to make hoods, wings, and side panels for the oval track cars.

Have fun! And practice your painting - that's the hardest to get right. Almost everything ends up too shiny. Use flat paint for nearly everything except body parts and chrome.

I like tamiya too!

I have built a c5r, Porsche GT1 Race car, Challenger, Shelby Series 1, Mustnag SVT Cobra.

I don't really build many, maybe one ever other month. What i really love is that you can buy rims, and really spice up your model car. ;)

If I found one, I'd buy it probably...

Kyosho makes a 1/18 RX-7(3rd gen) but it's 50 bucks from Exoticar, and I found it at the international car show and the guy was charging $60, and he wouldn't listen when I tryied to reson with him...

Sweet site man, thanks for the link!

And I did a Mazda search...there's only the Miata(1st and 2nd gen) and the RX-7(3rd gen)...I have a Gate Miata 1st gen...might get the 2nd gen from them.

what i mean by custom is i paint it differently and dont put the stickers on, so it will look like a supes-up regular car.

I just go to a local hobby shop to buy models. I have built over 100 models since I started. It's easy with an airbrush. I've got some pretty nice ones. If I do buy models on-line I go to www.ehobbies.com Its a pretty good hobby site.

well, i think i will get the Tom's supra kit...more common to find,

and when i do find a denso, they are very expensive...i think the tom's looks better, too

The Denso looks way better! Just look at the rims, the wheels, the windshield and the grill!

You do mean castrol denso do you? Because the Tom's is a castrol as well... well, I was talking about the above picture.

well... i was thinking and...the headlights may be decals, and that would not look realistic if i did not paint the car in the "racing colors" and apply the decals..if anyone have ever done the denso or tom's supra before, tell me

I was pleasantly suprised with the selection at the Hobby Lobby.
Otherwise you'll have to seek out specialty stores.
I got my '62 T-bird at Hobby Lobby. I am slowly making it a replica of my first car.

Hobby link Japan is the best place for tamya kits and the like. I'm gonna do a skyline soon, with illuminated headlights, taillights, possibly blinking signals, and interior lighting (including lit instruments)
