Hello!

As said in the title, my mother is getting herself a new car. She asked me for my recommendations, and so I came up with two cars that I think is suited for her.

-Subaru Legacy 3.6R

-Mitsubishi Lancer RalliArt

-BMW 328i xDrive Sedan

(Both are new cars)

I chose these cars because, well, mostly because I like them :D, but also because these cars fill her criteria:

-Automatic transmission
-Price of less than $40,000

So, which is the better car?

(I'm going to be driving either one when I grow up, which is why I put the RalliArt in )

Get the Ralliart!!!!!!!!

Mitsubishis are great cars I love the one my friend has and they're relatively cheap for a car like that.

Under 40k? Why not just throw your mom in an STI?

Both choices are dumb since you're just looking for some semi-powerful AWD "rally car" so you can drive it.

Was thinking the same thing. STI and EVO are under 40k, right?

I guess you're right.

But no STI because it's a manual.

EDIT: That's 40K CAD, not USD.

I'd recommend the Legacy, it's an actual mid-size sedan. The Lancer on the other hand is considered a compact sedan. My parents are planning on getting a new Legacy Outback 3.6R. :D

Is there any more criteria then under $40k CND and an auto? Typically those who aren't 16-30 have some other motive for buying a car other then cost and transmission. They are either looking for something practical, gets good fuel economy, or is comfortable. Also does she need AWD? I know it's Canada and it does snow there, but is it a must?

Honestly, your mom would probably enjoy something like a Ford Fusion SEL with AWD, they start at 30K CND and are an extremely sound vehicle that is reliable, comfortable and somewhat sporty. There is also the 2012 Focus that continuously wins praise from the automotive press as being an epic car, it was enough to convince me to go look at one and now I'm cruising in a well equipped Titanium spec one.

Your mom probably wouldn't like the Lancer Ralliart since it gets horrid mileage at 17/25 and has summer only tires, which I'm guessing isn't something that works well in Canada. Along with that it has large wheels and sport tuned suspension meaning it will be uncomfortable to ride in. While you might like it, it doesn't seem like a car a middle aged women would really care for.

The Legacy is probably more your mom's speed, but does she really need the 3.6L engine? The 2.5i Limited is probably all the vehicle she will need. This means she can save money on getting the smaller engine and apply it towards comfort options. The only issue I can see with the 2.5 is that you have to get a CVT, which I think is a scaled down version of Satan, although I'm guessing your mom won't care or notice.

I agree with Joey 100%, she should get either a Fusion or the lesser Legacy and save some good money. I'd also like to recommend a Ford Taurus (non-SHO) as well, it does everything right for a parent but be boring and slow enough to not have her kids wreck it.

+1 On the Fusion AWD. Great, underrated car. Of course now we can only hope this doesn't turn into another Focus lover thread. :sly:

But seriously though, my dad's had the Fusion since they first put them out, never had any major issues, and has survived more than a couple rough Ohio winters without a hitch.

The Mitsu will never sound like a Porsche, the Subaru does a pretty good impression

WOW! How does one get a Legacy to sound like that? I need to drive a 6cyl Legacy to see what's up. :D

I didn't recommend the 2.5i because it has a CVT. Granted, I've never driven a car in my life, but I have been in one and the sound from it is as annoying as the engine sounds from GT5.

Why are you counting out American cars, if I might ask?

My parents used to own two American cars (Ford F-150 and Oldsmobile Cutlass). The Ford was good, but not the Oldsmobile. It has major problems that resulted in two engine swaps. We currently own a Pontiac Montana SV6 van that we got in 2007, and the interior has already begun to fall apart.

Come to think of it, Ford isn't too bad of a choice, actually. :dunce:

Your mom is going to look stupid in a Lancer Ralliart.

I guess you're right LOL. I just wanted to get something close to an Evo before it's gone :(. Then again, it's mom's car .

You do know you are considering a Lancer Ralliart, right? :p

CVT's work great for the average person, it's just that anyone interested in sporty driving can't stand them. My beef with them is that they are just so awkward feeling for me.

And never actually driven a car must make it a little hard to actually suggest something, no? Having quite a bit of free time myself, I do drive quite a few cars from dealerships so I can at least throw my comments in based on personal experience. Granted this doesn't necessarily make a car good or bad, but first hand impressions often offer a better insight into the car.

To be honest the Ford Fusion and the Mazda 6 share a platform through the AutoAlliance International joint venture, so in a roundabout way you are getting something kind of Japanese with a Fusion if you want to look at it like that. A badge on a car means nothing now days with all the partnerships.

And it looks like based on your past experiences you need to stay away from the crap GM used to produce, and I think that's actually pretty fair. Their newer stuff is much better although the Cruze is significantly outclassed by its American rival, the Focus. GM will have better models coming in the next few years though.

If you are looking to stay away from American cars though might I suggest the new Kia Optima, you can get a fully loaded SX model for about $35k CND. The Hyundai Sonata is another sound choice, in the 2.0T Limited trim you are looking at about $34k CND and that's pretty much fully loaded as well. They even offer a hybrid model as well if that's your mom's thing. Both of these cars will come with at 100,000km/5year warranty as well, I believe.

If your mom wants to move up into something a bit nicer, there is the Acura TSX. In the tech trim with the 2.4L I4 you are looking at a rather nice vehicle for $37k CND. You will get Honda's reliability with Acura's luxury.

Even the Infiniti G Sedan with the touring package will run you just under $40k CND with factory rebates, and that is a well equipped car that is both sporty and comfortable. Same goes for the Lexus IS250 with RWD and the sport package.

Personally, I'd go with a Fusion, it's a good balance of performance, style, comfort, fuel economy and affordability. Just because one has $40k to spend on a car, doesn't mean they need to spend that to get what they are looking for.

And with the BMW 3-series, $40k CND doesn't buy you a whole lot. You can get a 328i with a few options and that's it. I guess you could look at the X1 but why in god's name would you want, what is essentially a MINI Countryman, with a BMW badge? You would probably get more car for your money with the Legacy over a 328i, although that's just looking quickly at the features.

Also, as far as I remember the Legacy is built in the US.

Yup, built in Lafayette, Indiana.

OP: Don't worry about your mom looking bad in the Lancer. My mom drives one as well. Granted, I have the basic DE version, but the looks of the car does draw attention :)

CVT.... it's okay at most. I'd rather have that than a stupid 4 speed auto tho...

When you need power, just floor the pedal, and the car will go!
