Hello hardware forum, be gentle with me as I'm rubbish with this sort of thing.

I'm looking for an idea of what monitors to consider.

I want to use it with my ps3 for gt6, it will be mounted on a sturdy table I mount my wheel on.

It will sit about 8 inches from the back of my dfgt, so about 14 inches or so away from my hands on the wheel, I sit with relatively straight arms, so id probably be about 3-4ft from the screen.

What sort of size should I be looking at? I don't want to go too big, but what's the smallest you think I would get away with, without losing immersion.

Pixel technology

This is where I know nothing.

I notice monitors have clearer up close pictures because it's harder to notice the individual pixels, what's the best in this regard, and what should be avoided?

Am I even right in thinking I can get a monitor that will have a hdmi port, and run from a ps3?

Id also like it to be compatible with a ps4 when I get one.

Thanks in advance :cheers::gtpflag:

I would recommend a tv around 27"-30" if you are 3-4 feet away. I personally would not go any smaller than 21" if you are 3-4 feet from the tv.

Yes you can get a monitor or tv that will have HDMI.

For best picture image I would lean toward 120hz refresh rate but 60 hz is okay. As for brand I always recommend Sony or Samsung. The great news with electronics is you usually have around 15-30 days and if you are not happy, you can return for a full refund. Then you can try another tv.

Pretty much any monitor with HDMI will work great on your PS3, and with PS4, so no worries there. As for size, I'd say get the biggest you can afford. Some people say 1 inch per inch your eyes will be away from the screen is the rule of thumb, but some people sit 2 feet from 50 inch TVs. I'd say realistically you're probably looking at a 24 inch monitor tho, as once you get larger they start sharply increasing in price.

I'm in the process of reworking my rig so my displays (3x32inch TVs) can be about 6 inches closer to me, and only about 6 inches from the wheel itself. I've been using the "inch to inch" rule and it works fine, but I think the closer in I can bring the displays the greater the immersion, so that's how I'm doing it!

I would recommend the 39" Vizio 1080p 60hz. Can be had all Walmart in the high $300's.

I have one on my obutto and it's the perfect size. Honestly looking at 32" tv's it was bout the same price or cheaper. Been happy with the quality and picture.

I would recommend either a Samsung or LG monitor. I use a 22" LG monitor/TV combo, has loads of input connections, HDMI, scart, D-sub, composite (CVBS) and component. And I have two of these monitors and the picture quality is very good. I got them from Asda but at the moment they are £99 each but don't know if they have sold out (I know at my local Asda they have none left.) But if you can find one get one. Here is a link for the monitor on Amazon, http://www.amazon.co.uk/LG-ELECTRONICS-22MN43D-1080p-SCART/dp/B00BNSZ486/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1394210233&sr=8-3&keywords=lg+tv+monitor#productDescription

Also stay clear of Acer monitors, I had one for 22 days before i had a pink/blue line on the right hand side of the screen.

like mentioned above I would buy a full HD pc monitore just because they are made for gaming . way better reaction time then tv's .
mine's from benq 27" and games look better than on my 60" full hd led 3d whatever tv.
cheers

Thanks a lot people.

I was leaning down the monitor route rather than TV.

So stick to big brands, Sony, Samsung, LG etc, no smaller than 24 inch preferably a 32-39, atleast 60hz but 120 would be better.

Excellent, I shall be on the hunt.

Thanks alot!

For monitor brands I'd strongly suggest Viewsonic, ASUS or to a lesser extent BenQ. I wouldn't stick to the mainstream brands for computer hardware but this is just my humble opinion. Make a quick search on Amazon for these brands and you'll find lots of high quality monitors with good reviews.

Bear in mind that HDMI to DVI cables are cheap so if the display you want doesn't have HDMI, it's no problem to just buy a cable to connect your PS3/4. I have a £3 DVI - HDMI cable connecting my PS3 to my centre Dell U2312HM right now and it works fine, absolutely no problems at all.

At 32 inches and over you'd tend to be more into tv territory where you should be aware that there is almost no tvs with native 120hz. 120hz mode on a tv will actually only be detrimental. Monitors are completely different and there are options that genuinely improve performance.

I'm very interested to check out light boost in action myself.

Thankyou again, every body.

I think 32 will be more than enough.

I'm skint at the moment, but I'll definitely drop a post here when I have made a decision.

Thanks again:tup:

Some people say that a TV-Monitor is better than a Monitor, because they have better microchips to manage the upscaling of the resolution of the console, rather than monitors that show the input as it comes...
What do you guys think?

I was leaning down the PC monitor route for price alone.

I think the lag from the processing would be seen as a negative for gaming, rather than the better graphics being a positive.

Just a guess, as I know naff all about the technicalities.

Well the two LG monitors I have (both are the same) are monitor/TV combo and the picture is very good and sharp (also picture settings can be customised,to suit). Unlike my short lived Acer monitor (blury, not as sharp)

I think so, as my TV/monitor combo ticks the boxes when I looked it up. Source of what I looked up is included.

In-Plane Switching (IPS) Panels are a more expensive option, but have great color accuracy and better viewing angles than TN or VA panels. As a result, they're great for graphic designers or photographers, but even if you don't fall into that category, IPS panels are noticeably better looking than TN. However, they don't come in higher refresh rates, and can sometimes have a slower response time than TN panels. This is only really a problem if you're a very competitive gamer, or if you want to game in 3D (since 3D gaming requires a 120Hz monitor). Plane-Line Switching (PLS) Panels are very similar to IPS, but even better—and more expensive.

@FuzzyFez

Any word on what monitor you decided on? I've been on the same hunt and have came down to these two (anyone feel free to jump in here), how do these look?

ViewSonic-LED 27-LED-Lit

ViewSonic-LED 27-IPS LED

EDIT: or this HP 27 IPS-LED backlit
I have been looking at this

Can't really justify over £200 and looking the big names, it quickly jumps over that price.

I'll probably end up going to my local CEX and picking one up second hand.

Or this company is local to me and very friendly, so I would probably support them, but the choice is limited. I'm sure they could source me somthing appropriate though.

@FussyFez: Does the size of the monitor matter?? My 22" LG TV/monitor do me well for what I use them for (gaming, photo editing, watching videos and watching TV). As £180 or higher is where you will get a big monitor but the price is not justifiable.

But I will say this, if you local Asda has any of the LG TV/monitor combos left that I have buy one as for £99 its a bargain. Also be carefull buying used monitors as you dont know if they have screen burn or are nearly passed it and don't have long left until the picture goes odd.

I think, given how close I am, even a 22 would be fine, but I like the idea of a 27, seems perfect. I'm currently using a 32inch Samsung TV that sits about 6 feet away, so even a 22, 2-3 feet closer, should be fine.

Yeh, I am wary of second hand, truth be told I will probably end up grabbing one on sale when I see an offer on, like the one you mentioned.

I'll go see if my local asda has any on that £99 offer.

Thanks mate 👍

Well them LG TV/Monitors are popular my local Asda has none left (for £99 does not surprise me at all). But as some wont have many or none left be prepared to look in other Asda stores within the surrounding area your in or if they dont have any Amazon will but not at £99 tho.

And happy to help
