Why are my lap times so much more consistent when I dont use abs? Normally my lap times tend to be 3-4 tenths apart depending on the course with abs, but without it I'm getting much closer, albeit slightly slower times. for example I ran a stock cobra with sports mediums in the new seasonal on ssr5 and had 3 laps separated by 4 hundredths! This isn't the first time either, whenever I run my 330 p4
or even a NASCAR I'll get similar results.
Has anyone else experienced this, or can anyone explain it?

I find that with ABS, I get back into bad "arcade" habits like braking too late, mashing down on the brake pedal, keeping the brakes on in turns, etc. Whereas without ABS, I need to really concentrate on treating the game more like I was in a proper car - otherwise I end up against a wall or fence somewhere. In all, I probably drive more smoothly; little slower into the corners but I apex better and have more ideal corner exits. Also I suspect that the tyres don't suffer as much, so the grip stays higher for longer into whatever competition I am in. I know that doesn't explain slower, because I am typically faster without ABS. Very likely the speed will come up with lots of practice.

Aside: there is a trophy available called the human stopwatch - complete 3 consecutive laps 2/10 of the best lap time. I won it in an A-spec race while running no ABS.

I'm sure the more experienced people here can probably point you to some reasons within the game programming itself as to why using ABS results in less consistency, too. I would be interested to hear if there are any theories of this type.

I don't use ABS but haven't noticed my times as I don't use the HUD. I will check tonight and report my findings.

I think using ABS makes you less alert when it comes to braking points. Just the thought of not having ABS might be doing something psychologically, resulting in you paying more attention?
I sometimes run with no ABS, but most of the time I'll leave it at 1 and no higher, all other aids off. I tend to forget sometimes that I have no ABS and go off into the dirt :dunce:.

Try check braking distances. I think the ABS in GT5, unless you set it to a 10/10 brake distribution, doesn't fully use the tires' maximum braking potential*.

I left this out before but I'm using a ds3 with the classic controls.
My first theory to why this happens was that I have to concentrate so much harder than I do without abs. I can see being consistent with race cars, but doing this with a stock cobra, which is a handful with abs, baffles me.

Classic controls is probably the reason. Try turning your steering sensitivity up.. the car handles a lot better and you can smash your old ghosts/times by a landslide.
