Parts of this have already been Covered.

Rumors say that Maserati may use some of their old names for their new upcoming Coupe. The current names, Coupe and Spyder, do not really give the cars some true identity like it used to be in the sixties and seventies.

The new Maserati GT/Mistral will come as a 2+2 Coupe and as a 2 seater Spyder with a retractable steel top.

Its engine is based on the Ferrari built 4.2 liter V8, as in the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione. The new GT’s engine will have 4.5 liter and deliver about 500 bhp instead of 450 bhp as in the Alfa. The new car will have a double-wishbone suspension with the known Skyhook adaptive damping system and also the Cambiocorsa clutchless gearbox mounted in the rear. Another source is talking about a completely new 6-speed gearbox with paddle shifters from ZF, but also of a traditional manual gearbox with a clutch.

The design will be a mixture between modern and sporty looks and the classic Maserati A6GCS/53. The oval and at the same time concave grille will stand out and make this car a real head turner. The photoset includes a first shot of the dashboard. Launch of the new Maserati is expected at the Geneva Motor Show 2007

One things almost certain, the car will probably be stunning to look at.

I hope that picture is an artists impression mock-up. As it stands it looks really out of proportion, like an unhappy mix of Quatraporte front and Merc SLK rear 👎

Quattroporte?? It looks more like the Gran Sport!

Not bad IMO but the rear does look slightly out of proportion.

Ciao!

Definitely a bad PhotoCrop, but I'm sure the end result will be nice. I think the folding hard-top suits Maserati much better anyway. Not that the Spyder looks bad, but the smooth lines of the Coupe/GranSport just look so nice.

Cute M3 wing vents, too. :sly:

If they bring back Ghibli, it'd better be on a DB9 killer. The Ghibli was a majestic Daytona fighter, just as the Mistral went head to head with the 275GTB/4 and the DB5.

...Maybe if Maserati is up to it they could bring back the BiTurbo!!!

In all seriousness, I'd love to see the following return:

- Mistral
- Ghibli
- Kahmsin
- Bora
- Merak

...Of course several would require Maserati to bring back the MR design, and that probably won't happen...

Not unless they design a brand new chassis by themselves, cause Ferrari probably won't let them have the F430 tub. With Maserati essentially owned by Alfa I'm doubting even the validity of this Neo-Mistral.

Certainly so. I doubt Alfa through FIAT is willing to dump that much cash into the company without the guidance of Ferrari these days. With the American launch of Alfa in the not too distant future, I'm certain they are more concerned about getting the 8C and Brera "right" for the US market, and getting the 159 ready as well.

If Maserati is looking to expand the line, my guess is that it would come in the form of a larger GT, as sources have pointed out before, to split the difference between the Coupe/Spider/Grand Sport and the Quattroporte. Good idea I say, but they need to make sure that it can match the standard of that segment, the 650ci.

Truthfully, the only new "Maserati" that I see in the near future (lets say 3 years) is the 8C. If and only if that is as successful as everyone knows it is going to be will Alfa venture out and split the brand more. I really don't think Maserati actually needs another car right now truthfully, as the 4200GT (mostly Spyder) seems to sell in numbers only dwarfed by the Mercedes SL.

I agree for the most part. I'd say they are fine with the Coupe/Grand Sport/Spyder and the Quattroporte. They are pretty much covering all the bases there, and although I think your sales point is a bit questionable (I don't seem them as often as I would like in Grand Rapids), you are right in that the SL is the main competition.

I think most "sane" people would look towards the SL and the Jaguar XK as the standards in the group, what it comes down to is the need for two seats or four (usable) seats. Those folks like us who care more about the drive and the sound of the car would certainly find the Maserati more appealing, myself included, but they are so hard to find and so hard to have repaired (at least around here) that I would stay away.

...But it is always a special event when I'm back home in Ada/Forest Hills (just outside of where I live in Grand Rapids, where I grew up) and see the few Maseratis driving around. There are two Quattroportes (one burgundy and the other silver), one Spyder (silver), and one Coupe (blue). They are just so beautiful, and sound absolutely incredible. Definitely more appealing than your "average" Mercedes, until the SL600 pulls up... Or until both are shown up by the local DB9 Volante and Jaguar XK.

They are all over Pennsylvania (mostly in the Hershey area) and D.C. for some reason.

Yeah, the 8C is a great car, but it's much more like a Maserati than an Alfa Romeo. At least, not the way Alfa has been in the last 40 years. I can't picture any new car for Maserati even if they did come up with something. They have a conventional GT (coupe/spyder) and sporty sedan (Quattroporte). What else could they fit in there? I doubt they'd go downmarket much, considering that Lancia is supposed to be returning. I can't see them going upmarket into the supercar/semi-supercar segment, since that would seriously detract from Ferrari. Maybe the luxury SUV from a few years ago (but hopefully with a better name)? Very against type for Maserati, but so was the Cayenne.

I know. But it is soo pretty, and it will be interesting to see whether the 4200GT replacement will be above the 8C or not..

If they would actually sell an SUV called the "Kubang" I would strive my entire life to get one.
